Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

Played with my country band last night with my vmp5 and a slightly new signal chain. On our break I asked the sound guy if the tone was translating well to his PA rig. He said it sounded awesome and asked what kind of bass I had. His response was laughing in a "that's awesome" kinda way. (to be fair this guys ears mixed with his gear could make most musicians sound amazing no matter their rig)
This bass has been good to me over a year now. I'm still slowly trying different strings but it's pretty obvious that the bass just straight up sounds good.

Just when I thought I couldn't like my squier VM P bass any more. I like it much more.
I just got it back yesterday afternoon. no clips I am very low tech, but as I play out & with anything that gets recorded worth listening to I'll do my best to get it posted. it sounds killer, much more than I expected.

OK I had the J pup added in the sweet spot, it's from a squier VM 70's J5 Duncan design, with concentric knobs for V/T/V/T I did a lot of homework on this site.and the end result, I'm really happy with it.and what a great palette of tones you can get out of it. it kills!!! also it's all squier except for the pots, knobs & strap loxx. It came out much better than I expected. it's a keeper. thanks again.

Actually, that's not 70's position. It's further away from the bridge, right about where Fender puts it on the new Am Deluxe PJ, and where Dingwall outs the bridge pick up on his FD3-equipped Super P's.
I suspect that's part of the reason it sounds so good. That was my favourite spot, when I did comparison testing via a special jig.
you know what? your right! I had to think about it, when I dropped it off I was torn between 60's & 70s then I said put it where you think it will sound best.
the original knobs I wanted were on back order so about 3 weeks into waiting I called and said I want it 70s spacing, & he said I already routed it don't worry your going to love it. and I do. good eye steve_rolfeca
I'm pretty late to the party here. I just found out about the VM 5 P basses and how cheap they are. I got a bunch of high end J basses but I started on a P 35 years ago and I wouldn't mind having one again. I play latin jazz and funk these days and I like to solo and play heads. So the extra pickup might be something I would be interested in as well. But this placement at the end of the pickguard sounds terrible to me.

I don't have my P5 yet but I'm already thinking about how I'm going to modify it.Quick release bridge for sure, but I want to get EMGs for it as well. EMG sells a P 5 pickup. Does anybody here have those in the bass? Do they fit without routing? I'm also going to put in the EMG EQ circuit with treble and bass boost/cut.

*3 ply B/W/B Pickguard
*Barrel knobs
*Dunlop dual design strap locks
*Back of the neck sanded down to remove a bit of that sticky finish
In the future, I plan on getting some Hipshot Ultralite Tuners and string retainers and order a vintage wiring kit to replace the pots, cap, jack and wiring as well as shield it with copper tape. Then I'll be done.

I've got a FIFO gig interstate this weekend. Debating whether to take my SR5 and Squier VM P5 in a Mono M80 dual gig bag or just the VM P5 in a Gator case.

Hey Hey! all, so I played my Squier P5 now a PJ5 at my normal AM & PM church services & later that evening went to an open jam, it is the growliest bass I have ever owned or played & very well the most inexpensive. it's almost shocking I'm super happy with it I will play it as long as I can.
Waiting at the airport to fly back from last night's gig. Couldn't face taking 2 basses in my mono gig bag, so took the VM P5 in a gator case. Sound tech loved our sound off stage. Commented in the clarity of my tone. Was stunned when I said I was playing a standard Squier.
Finally installed my Hipshot (designed) Ultralight tuners - used aluminum can spacers - turned out great! I think I have all the aftermarket parts I was wanting to do, not to decided if I really want to drop a few coins on a Marty Bell sparkle paint job.
I used most of the recipe that I saw here - Hipshot bridge, Nordstrand pickup, Emerson electronics... and a few cheesy stickers, but they can easily be removed. Sorry for the blurry pics!

I've been gassing hard for one of these. Are the stock pickups acceptable in terms of tone? Do they fall under the overwound class or more to the classic vintage P-bass tone?
