Squier VM Mustang Project...Pic Heavy

Awesome thread TK4261 !! :D

I ordered one of these, also in black, and it arrived today on my birthday !! Very excited, I also plan to drop in those Nordy's after seeing how great they look on yours. :hyper:

Quick question, how did you get the duncan designed writing off the pickup cover ? I noticed yours doesnt have it on ? :o

Thank you SBB

Pretty sure you will be happy with it.

I just used a 320 grit sanding pad to get the Duncan logo off it the I used some 0000 steel wool to smooth it out..Worked great and was easy & quick :D

Thank you very much, I'll head over to my hardware store next time I get a chance !!

After my mustang arrived, on some closer inspection I found it had a nasty scratch on it :bawl:
I made a special trip to the store and swapped it... I ended up choosing a sunburst instead  :D

Both of them look amazing though :)

Imagine how that sunburst one would look fitted with a light rosewood pickguard..
Props on the black and maple. That thing kills for looks.. maybe sound too, but my laptop refuses to load video right now. Grr..
Seriously, best 400-odd bucks ever spent! With something like this possible, I'm not sure I see the virtue in going for a real vintage one anymore..

I just purchased a squire VM Mustang Bass at a local music store. I love the way it plays-feels, but it has some issues electronically. It has a distorted sound ( mostly on the A string) with the Tone pot all the way up. If I turn the tone pot all the way down, the distortion goes away, but the tone becomes too bass heavy.

Rather than taking it back, Im considering doing the mods decribed in this thread ( Nordy nm4 pickups and new pots) Are there any other parts needed to wire this, capacitors, resisters etc ? Any other advice?:help:

Grab the Fender 250k volume/tone pots if your music store sells them. I used the capacitor that came with the pots. Also maybe a new input jack and definitely some shielding...Copper shielding tape or shielding paint. You will be totally happy with those parts and a set of Nordy NM4's...My Mustang is quiet and sounds great!

Hope that helps :bassist:

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I wanted to express how beautiful that bass is.

I have an old US fender mustang I have been planning on rebuilding and you have inspired me. I also am going to look at a squire mustang tomorrow and I think this is about on the lines I'm going to do with it after I buy it, only different pickguard.

Thanks so much for sharing, even if I am late!

Great project. Thinking of modding my mustang the same way. Would be my first mod--any newbie advice or recommended threads?

I have had trouble tuning and intonating flats--looks like these strings have no silks at the headstock and might even be tapered? What brand are you using?

Thank you
I couldn't really find to many threads before on the Mustang.

I am using DR Sunbeams Short Scale strings..They are a good match for the Nordstrand pickups :)

I'm thinking of getting one of these basses and doing some of the the mods you did. I don't see the Nordy NM4 pickups on their website, though...do you know if they are still available?

And a second question for you. How does this bass record? Does it sit nicely in the mix?
