Squire Basses

I got a Squier Pbass and love it. I bought a RIC cuz I always wanted to try one and it actually took a while before it became my go to bass. My band prefers the fender but i think its mostly because of the looks. However I have found when I do break out the Fender the mids are much quieter than the RIC. However if I have the vintage switch thrown on the RIC the lows are pretty quiet. I also notice I play a smoother style with the Squier and more aggressive with the RIC. Maybe I should turn the Squier into a project.
Could anyone tell me exactly what the hipshot bridge does? Would this be a good place to start if I was going to do some mods?

+1 Gorgeous bass.

To the OP, there's no shame in owning a Squier. In fact, just yesterday I walked into GC and walk out with a black Affinity V. The bass kicks serious butt - and yes, I own a very nice MIA Fender Jazz Deluxe V (for about 5 months now). But to be totally honest, I'm completely stoked on how incredible the Affinity 5-string sounds. Maybe I'm just a passive J-bass guy at heart & finally realizing it? I'll gladly save the wear & tear on the MIA 5-string for the next several gigs at least. A great bass is a great bass - regardless of price tag.

I have a 2001 Squire JAzz that is possibly one of the best basses I have ever own and just this past weekend I scored a Squire P Bass for 90 bucks at a local music store and it sounds and plays amazing! I agree..nothing wrong with owning a Squire. They ROCK!

I too have a 4 day old white Affinity V!....for the price i paid for it - it was a steal.

Believe it or not a Gotoh 201 (in black of course) on the VM J's make it sweeter and gives it a rounder tone, plus sustain for days!!

You will love it -- i have seen guys with an arsenal of expensive and old basses, and right in the middle is a VM J!!

I didn't say dead, I said It sounded great at first and after a while it sounded flat. Not dead, flat. And that's all personal to what you're used to.
By all means buy a Squire, buy two for that matter. I've owned the same 1982 first year Squire Jazz I bought in spring of 1983 and I love it. In the words of Charlton Heston "From my cold dead fingers/hands."(how ever that comment went when he was working for the NRA). And I'm so glad to see they're making quality instruments again. I thought after a brilliant beginning in Japan they turned into Fender's "just throw the name Squire on it and get it out the door instrument." Starting with the crap Korea produced for Fender in the late 80's.
I know nothing about the Maple bodies they're making now. The Maple I know(you know, Canada Maple Trees. We got so many of these trees we put its leaf on the flag). Here Maple is a dense heavy wood better for necks, too heavy for bodies. But I'm guessing like basswood the Maple they use is grown quickly in southern climes and then is lighter and comes out like swamp ash. Maybe someone who knows can fill me in on the that.

don't do this too me - been wanting a Fender Jazz for a while. now i gotta consider the Squire VM basses as well.

A VM would be as fine a step as any I can think of if you've been wanting to get into a passive Jazz bass. I took a long hard, scrutinizing look at my new Affinity 5, and I gotta say I am so damned impressed its not even funny. I guess I assumed Squier was entry level stuff not worth considering. But boy am I considering them now. Makes me want to get another one (or two). ;) I'll try to post a pic, maybe a short sound clip later tonight.

Lots of Squier love here and I have to say I love my VM Squier family!

Don't forget brother Tele!!

I swore the only Squier I'd ever own would be one of the original Japanese models until last week. I bought an Active Jazz 5 string. I hate 5 strings, but I LOVE! this bass. I tried a vm jazz and a vm p. the jazz has too thin a neck like all jazzez do and the p felt like a toy. a very serious weight difference between it and my Fender P. The full width spacing on my 5ver is the best ever. The quality of Squier is escalating!!!:hyper:

Here's a few pics of the Affinity 5-string I picked up yesterday - LOVE this bass!

A couple of sound clips:

New strings on the bass - kind of bright sounding on the recording. I may have clipped/slight distorted a couple of times on the 1st clip.
