this smokes my am dlx jazz v
I'm considering what to do for phase III of my Squier project. I love the sound of the stock pre and pickups but will probably replace them...........just because
I'm also going to drill the body and make a ferule so I can run the B string through the body.
So far, Hipshot tuners, Badass V bridge, carbon fiber nut, neck plate and string tree, powder coated knobs, vintage tint on the neck and DR Low Riders.
After further experimenting and fiiling the nut, I have the B string as good if not BETTER than ANY other B string I've played. I'm hoping the string through mod will make it even better by allowing more of the thin part of the string to wrap around the tuner.

That's quite a mod list - the string-thru option would be interesting. I don't know if it would yield the results you're looking for though. My MIA has both thru-body & top-load option, but I don't really hear a discernable difference between the 2 to be quite honest. I know it's supposed to give more sustain, etc., but maybe I'm just deaf, lol. Before going that route, have you tried/considered a taper-core B string for more punch & clarity? Just curious.
That's a great looking bass, BTW - I had every intention of buying the Active Squier Jazz (in white), but I played the Affinity first & got it instead. My logic was that I was going to be modding it out anyway, and I thought the standard Jazz control plate would make it easier for an Audere-type of preamp to drop right in. The nut-work, fret-work, etc., on the Affinity is perfect. Love the sound of the stock pickups, so maybe just an Audere (for more on-the-fly tone adjustments) & call it done. I want to retain the passive tone 1st & foremost but still have active tone shaping when needed - I hear that the Audere is the best thing going for just such a thing. Any ideas on the preamp you are considering for yours?
The Vintage Modified Jazz is the best out of the 3 you mention.
It's basses like this that leave me scratchin' my head saying, "now exactly why did I pay what I did for <insert almost any J-bass under $1 Grand here>?" I hate to admit it, but with the right preamp (Audere maybe) this one would smoke my MIA Deluxe V as well. It already does in playability. That just ain't supposed to be right. Now where did I put my flame retardant suite? I may need it soon...yikes!

As far as the B string through mod, I'm more interested in getting the fat part of the string off the tuner. The string through will take up the extra length in the string. Having the fat part of the string contact the tuner causes it to bind a little against the previous wraps of the string.
I find the neck profile of the affinity v a ton more comfy than the mia deluxe or any fender 5 neck except the custom shop closet classic 5. that in itself is a good reason to mod them mess out of one of these.
Fralins and the audere pre. and the body is alder right?
Invalid Link RemovedI want to say that the Affinity bodies are Agathis - I believe that's what the Squier website says.
Squier standard series basses have agathis bodies and so does the squier VM precision

Squier by Fender Affinity 5-String Jazz Bass V Features:
Solid Body Electric Bass
Alder Body
Maple Neck
Rosewood Fingerboard
20 medium jumbo frets
34" scale
1.875 nut width
Chrome hardware
2 single-coil Jazz Bass V pickups
2 Volume and 1 tone control
that is another reason why I think these are good things to mod.
have you considered using a ferrule to hold the ball end away from the bridge-tail? OK, it may look pants, but it's less drastic than drilling a hole through the body...
