this smokes my am dlx jazz v

It's basses like this that leave me scratchin' my head saying, "now exactly why did I pay what I did for <insert almost any J-bass under $1 Grand here>?" I hate to admit it, but with the right preamp (Audere maybe) this one would smoke my MIA Deluxe V as well. It already does in playability. That just ain't supposed to be right. Now where did I put my flame retardant suite? I may need it soon...yikes!

I'm considering what to do for phase III of my Squier project. I love the sound of the stock pre and pickups but will probably replace them...........just because :)

I'm also going to drill the body and make a ferule so I can run the B string through the body.

So far, Hipshot tuners, Badass V bridge, carbon fiber nut, neck plate and string tree, powder coated knobs, vintage tint on the neck and DR Low Riders.

After further experimenting and fiiling the nut, I have the B string as good if not BETTER than ANY other B string I've played. I'm hoping the string through mod will make it even better by allowing more of the thin part of the string to wrap around the tuner.

That's quite a mod list - the string-thru option would be interesting. I don't know if it would yield the results you're looking for though. My MIA has both thru-body & top-load option, but I don't really hear a discernable difference between the 2 to be quite honest. I know it's supposed to give more sustain, etc., but maybe I'm just deaf, lol. Before going that route, have you tried/considered a taper-core B string for more punch & clarity? Just curious.

That's a great looking bass, BTW - I had every intention of buying the Active Squier Jazz (in white), but I played the Affinity first & got it instead. My logic was that I was going to be modding it out anyway, and I thought the standard Jazz control plate would make it easier for an Audere-type of preamp to drop right in. The nut-work, fret-work, etc., on the Affinity is perfect. Love the sound of the stock pickups, so maybe just an Audere (for more on-the-fly tone adjustments) & call it done. I want to retain the passive tone 1st & foremost but still have active tone shaping when needed - I hear that the Audere is the best thing going for just such a thing. Any ideas on the preamp you are considering for yours?

I'm pretty much done with all the mods I'm gonna do to this Affinity. I picked the bass up in really bad shape from some kid for $15 last summer and then spent the next month giving the neck a couple daily minute tweaks until it resembled a neck again ;) I then put it on hold for a couple months. Last mid November, I got back to it by adding an Artec pu and Bayou wiring harness. The next month I added the Gotoh 201 and the final touches showed up last week in the form of the tort pickguard and allparts knobs. I'm seriously impressed with the aggressive tone and great feel this bass has. I was never really into Precisions until I got into this rescue project. This cheapie helped me develop a new appreciation for the P tone. I originally just wanted to mod it and then ebay it, but I think I'm gonna hang on to it for a little bit as I really dig the tone. Oh yeah, everytyhing came out to less than $75 :D

If the picture took you're looking at a 1982 Squire Jazz Bass (62-reissue Alder Body) with an original 1962-bridge, 65-rewound Jazz pickups, two different color pickup covers just to be different. Two passive volume controls and a custom made fret-less ebony Jazz neck(by F-Bass). I have the original Squire neck waiting in the wings for another project. (Look between the a and d string at the bridge to see the thin brass strip which was exact to 62-jazz but now the reissues come with a thick brass strip.)
If it didn't take I'll try again.

As far as the B string through mod, I'm more interested in getting the fat part of the string off the tuner. The string through will take up the extra length in the string. Having the fat part of the string contact the tuner causes it to bind a little against the previous wraps of the string.

As far as changing the pickups and pre, I don't know. I really don't care for the Bart sound. I would love to try a passive Villex system with their booster.

I find the neck profile of the affinity v a ton more comfy than the mia deluxe or any fender 5 neck except the custom shop closet classic 5. that in itself is a good reason to mod them mess out of one of these.

Fralins and the audere pre. and the body is alder right?

have you considered using a ferrule to hold the ball end away from the bridge-tail? OK, it may look pants, but it's less drastic than drilling a hole through the body...

I want to say that the Affinity bodies are Agathis - I believe that's what the Squier website says.

Squier by Fender Affinity 5-String Jazz Bass V Features:

Solid Body Electric Bass
Alder Body
Maple Neck
Rosewood Fingerboard
20 medium jumbo frets
34" scale
1.875 nut width
Chrome hardware
2 single-coil Jazz Bass V pickups
2 Volume and 1 tone control

that is another reason why I think these are good things to mod.

I agree, and thanks for covering my failing memory. I should have looked again before posting. I need more coffee...:D

Yes but I like the single string through idea better. I think Mike Lull does his 5's like that. I got the idea somewhere

Bart, Thanks!! Yes, my Squier is my most played bass right now. 4 cortisone shots in my wrists and hands and I can play 5ers again. I should have kept my Reverend and LeCompte :(
