Stage Left or Stage Right?

Which do you prefer?

  • Stage Left

  • Stage Right

  • Whichever is closest to the high hat

  • I'm dead center because I'm kind of a big deal

  • No preference

This picture should be posted with the OP. Stage Left is House Right. It's kinda like left field/right field in baseball.

I've never bothered to develop a preference because I play in an organized (church) band under the direction of a band leader and I stand where they need me to stand today. In practice this is almost always stage right, about halfway between the drummer on the far right and the piano in the center since the tendency is to place other things on stage based on where the band stands rather than the other way around. The band leader is usually a vocalist who stands stage center and downstage of all of us but sometimes the band leader is the pianist so this is actually a good spot for me to be in because I can easily draw visual cues from the drummer, pianist, and band leader as needed. They rarely move the drummer but sometimes I have been stage left for special events where the placement of other things takes preference over the band's needs, very far from the stick wielding member of the band. But I still have a decent view of everyone I need to see. I am now at the pianist's back however so no facial cues but I get an excellent view of the pianist's hands from stage left and that can be very handy at times since the pianist does not always give any head or facial cues but their hands always give away their next move!

Yeah, I started wondering if people were getting it backwards. The idea for this came to me yesterday. I was searching the internet for a bass, then found the thread "pics of you playing your bass," then noticed that a lot of bassists are at stage right. I made this thread, then stage left was the most popular. Shrug.

I want to be nearest the person in the band I can have the most fun with and put on the best show. Sometimes its a guitarist , sometimes it's the drummer and sometimes it's the singer. Where they are is irrelevant to me. If they are hanging from the rafters , I'm a bat.
