Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

OK I am knew sow after my words dont try to kill me or your self....

I have a thought I try to make the thing you call in this forum set up on my bass. I have an stagg EDB I find it realy good for picks roads and scales but acro is realy bad, I mean realy realy bad.... I buy a bow-a cheap student french bow and I think I ready destroyed it some hair had curled, I dont know if this is bad you tell me please... NOW is the time for my idea I realy love the sound of pirastro Evah pirazzi which I heard from the site [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]...... So despite the high cost I realy loved the sound and I am thinking to put them at my stagg??? PLease give me some words........

Hey just picked up a stagg EDB for a nice $470 :D

just wondering what people are doing to lower the action, as mine seems fairly high.

thanks!

If the nut hasn't been touched since new, I'm guessing the strings will be a long way off the fingerboard at the nut end. Re-cutting the string grooves will make a difference. If the bridge height adjusters won't go low enough, you can shave the bottom of the bridge (upper section) to give you a little more adjustment. Despite what some think, it's made of maple.

See Invalid Link Removed :)

One more thing, would there be a reason not to completely remove the metal adjustment wheels and just have the bridge on the base piece?

I dont understand. Do you mean to remove the top portion of the bridge and fix it to the slot without using the original bridge feet? The bridge would be too short without the feet right?

There are slits below the feet where the piezo elements would fit in.

also, at the very base of the neck, bellow the strap post, there seems to be a small gap between the neck and the body, (approx. 1/4 in.) is this normal?

also, should the neck be more parallel to the body or the strings?

thanks!

No I meant remove the adjustment wheels from the posts, because that would create about a 1/4 inch drop in the action

Gaps between the sides of the neck and the neck pocket are inconsequential and fairly normal for a Stagg. Do you mean there's a gap between the body and the back of the neck where it sits in the neck pocket (almost as if the tension is pulling the neck forwards)? If there's a 1/4in gap and you need to drop your action by 1/4in, I think there lies your problem. Either the bolts aren't tight or there's a shim inside the neck pocket that hasn't been placed correctly.. The neck (grooved moulding down the side) shouldn't be parallel with the body when viewed from the side, it should appear to be slightly angled backwards.

A great hello from Germany!

I have recently bought a Stagg EDB 3/4. I've never played an upright bass before (even no acoustic) but the sound and feeling is amazing.
With a detailed look on the instrument I found that the bridge is very unstable and could be swung about a centimenter from top to bottom. I wondered what is the best for pickup and sound and set it just to the middle (about 90° angle to the corpus).
A few days later (I still was unsure why this happens) I detensioned all the strings and put the bridge out off the corpus. I found 2 things:

First thing I found was a piece of cable (should be the piezo element?) lying in each of the 2 holes under the bridge. BUT: on one side the cable was (correctly?) in the center of that hole and on the other side I was just at the side of that hole so besides and not under the wooden bridge.
I thought that this was incorrect and put both cables in the middle of the holes and so under that center of the bridge feet. Reason for this decision was that the original setting should result in worse contact to the piezo when swinging the bridge.
Still I am wondering whether this is correct and would like to get your opinion. Maybe anyone has made same experience or took a look under the bridge.
Is the piezo element really just in a cable form and no flat piece (thats what I tought before)?

Second thing: when having the bridge removed I found the two thread bolts that connect the two bridge pieces and allow the height adjustment were not screwed to the end into the bottom bridge piece. So a slight movement was also possible here and could influence the sound. Also here I thought this not to be correct and screwed the bolts as far as possible into the bottom piece (that was about 5-6 mm). Afterwards they were really fixed.
Also here I would like to hear some comment from you.

Thanks a lot for the detailed and very useful description and photos!!
I will carry out the modifications recommended by you as soon as possible. Very good idea with the snare stand ;-) I also wondered how to solve that problem.

One more question: Do you have any recommendations regarding the setting of the neck pole? How is it adjusted correctly?

Edited: Sorry for my poor English wording: What I meant was the truss rod setting...

hey you all, first of all sorry for my English, also I wan to thank you a lot for your help,,, one guy just made a video presentation that was real cool and helpfull... Now I want some more help, I realy like my stagg but I realy want to turn it for acro I just use it for (piccicato) and also I had some help for this technic but I realy want someone ho can guide me for the other bass things... I decide that I will give money for strings with not changing my bass(I will keep the comfortable stagg edb)... So for the best and smoothest sound I understand that I will go to the expensives - Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Double Bass Strings - orchestral tuning... I am ok with that...whatever outcome at final I may use them at the future at another bass... But what is the orchestral tuning they mean (E.A.D.G)? And what about the sound the stagg is electrik? I will hear anything, I am asking this beacause I am afraid that I will put classic guitar string and an electrik guitar... I hope you understand my point... At least the Pirastro Evah Pirazzi as the best Double Bass Strings they must sound realy good and beautyfull... By buying them I will make something stupid? please... give me some light...
