Stand - or Sit.

Sit or Stand?

haven't stood up on a gig for about two and a half years - if it's good enough for Fripp and Anthony Jackson.... :)

There are ways of making it work. Best thing to do is to make sure it looks intentional - I bought a drum stool to make sure I wasn't just perched on whatever crap happened to be lying around backstage. The other option is to sit on the edge of the drum-riser, like Pino did on the D'Angelo gig - though you gotta wear ear plugs if you're sitting that close to the kit!

a high stool might work, but it does look a bit folky. You might be better off looking nonchalant say on the edge of a big flight case, or perched on top of an 8 foot speaker stack! :)

experiment - you can make it work... ;)

I take it no one here has watched Metallica's S&M lately? James is sitting the entire time, everyone else is standing/walking around him. Doesn't look bad though, at all. I guess it could be because they were playing with an orchestra, but the fact that Newsted and Kirk were walking around and acting like fools at some points made it seems that you could sit and make it still enjoyable. For me that was a perfect example of a hard-rock/heavy metal band who's lead singer/rythem guitarist could sit and still make it kick ass.

well...considering i got over metallica a few years ago :smug: ....but i wouldnt of said newstead was "running around"....more like stomping......id see trujillo....now theres a man who runs around like he's got a cucumber stuck somewhere :D ...

but look at bands like chili peppers, george benson, joe satriani, hendrix, jco...ive never seen them sit down at a gig....but really it all comes down to wether your old legs can take it or not :smug: ...george benson doesnt seem to mind...or james brown....but it doesnt matter what they do, as long as they perform good, i think thats what matters

The thing on the right side doubles as a chair. It also has quite a laxative effect if you sit on it long enough

At rehearsals I have a high stool (barstool) that I half sit on. At gigs I stand, except one night we plpayed a gig right after I got out of the hospital and I really needed to sit. Again, I used a barstool as I could half stand comfortably. Even still, I did take some grief from a drunk in the audience who objected to my "laziness". BTW, this was with a classic rock band, and while we move around some, we're not going crazy as we're a gbunch of old guys and it can look pretty stupid to see a bunch of old guys act like teenagers. Granted, the Rolling Stones are a notable exception.

i've just started more recently playing bass (about 8months now), but whenever i practice i always stand, to me it just feels natural to stand, also i think it helps me with keeping in time to the beat of what i'm trying to play.

however when i go to lessons with my bass teacher that's always sitting, though to me its more uncomfortable to try to play while sitting but thats just my personal preference.

but i think i prefer to stand more becuase the music i work with has a nice fast pace to it, but if i were playing like something soft and slow then i think maybe sitting would be better.
