Stanley* Marcus Victor (SMV)

There are a couple of threads about this, and I already posted in one, however, just to say it again...

I downloaded the album from Amazon this morning (DRM-free, 256kbps MP3) and I've listened through it in it's entirety once.

I think it is safe to say that is not at all a bass heroes, show-off type album. The songs are well done and the album is well thought out as a whole as well. After one go-round I find that I like a couple of songs more than others, naturally, but I definitely think it is worth it.

Personally, I am more a fan of Marcus than of the collaboration, however, if you like any or all of these musicians, I don't think you'd be disappointed with SMV and Thunder.

I plan to see them on August 17th and am looking forward it to more now that I've heard the album.

That sounds good. I plan to pick up the CD today.:hyper::bassist::D

I saw this the other day, might be what you're looking for.

Yes School Days was a bass hit that changed everything, but I AM SICK TO DEATH of hearing Stanley play the same song FOREVER, since what 75???

Seems like every concert clip during his career he's playing School Days?

Silly Putty is next on the list!

I am going to get the CD.

This show looks awesome and I actually bought tickets before realizing that I wasn't going to be able to go. I apologize if this is in the wrong place, but I've got 4 tix if anyone is interested (Aug. 27th, Hollywood Bowl). PM me if you are. It should be a great show.

I downloaded it and listened through it twice.

My take is-

Maestros de las Frecuencias Bajas - The first song is utterly amazing to me, what one would hope from this, an intricate new song (to me) that shows off the chops without Wankery. Great song

The next song is pure wankery . Great wankery though, but kind of cliche' with the looping drum / hand clap track. Reminds me of Steve Vai and his constant cliche' head-banging grooves he solo's over. Headbanging is to Steve as Funk/clap is to SMV. This also goes for Lopsy Lu / Silly Putty. I feel cheated when someone wanks over a looping drum program, I don't care what genre it is. Maybe this is to make it danceable?

Hillbillies On a Quiet Afternoon & Lopsy Lu / Silly Putty - Come on come up with some new material instead of beating dead horses again & again and again. I'm hoping Marcus & Victor were behind these-Play Freebird Yeah!!!
These are Stanley's Freebird & Stairway to Heaven on this.

Grits is a nice closer-some great funk coming out without resorting to - Play School days!!!!

I wish the Cd was more in line with Grits and the first track, which, to me promised so much more. So much potential here.

Just my opinion.

I'm listening to the CD as I write and I like it. They definitely did not mail this one in! As for Stanley Clarke quoting his old tunes, why not? The man is getting close to sixty, and he truly is the godfather of upfront bass. It's a blessing that he has classic songs to quote. How many of us will ever be that fortunate?:hmm:

this is some crazy music. They avoiding both overdoing the low end and overdoing their solo prowess to make some really groovy tracks. Each musician has something of their "showcase track" where they are more the star than the others, but throughout the album i was most impressed with marcus. he can make da funk!

I've listened to it a few times and it's exactly what I expected.
Fun to listen to and they are amazing players, but I'll take recent CD's by Tony Grey and Janek Gwizdala for holding up after repeated listening. It's a nice and sweet snack, but I don't think it's a whole meal if you know what I mean.;)

Gwizdala is great, but I'm not familiar with Grey. I'll have to check him out.

I'm listening to the new Hiromi album now, Tony Grey kills as usual.

I dig Hiromi's new one too! It's funny, I recently read a review of Hiromi in a jazz magazine that compared her band to Deep Purple... I don't get that analogy at all.

*/sorry, back to the topic of SMV;)

What, Deep Purple?

/mentally compares Smoke on the Water to anything Hiromi's done

Nope, don't see it :P

Saw this in Bassplayer this month. I'll make up my mind when I hear it, if its showboating virtuosos, no thanks, if its creative, good, music, GOD yes!

Well the only other sort of 'bass hero collab' stuff I've heard has been Vic and Steve Bailey's Bass Extremes, and while there is a lot of showy stuff, they really played some amazing, creative music. I had pretty much every song from that video stuck in my head for days at a time.
