Stanley* Marcus Victor (SMV)

I will say I was VERY disappointed in the soundmen at the show. I was sitting somewhere near the front, and I was upset that Stanley and Marcus' bass frequencies literally put Vic's in the mud. How often do you ever hear someone say that? I could barely distinguish some of Vic's fingerstyle solo lines. :scowl:

I don't want to say it was Vic's bass, but man, at times it was like he was playing a P bass with old strings compared to Marcus and Stan. Marcus' tone as always was fat and cut through like crazy.......

Looks like Invalid Link Removed agrees:

While the sound mix didn't always give Wooten a fair shake, he was at his groove-happy best when serving up "Grits," another tune drawn from the trio's recent debut album.

Overall an outstanding review of the Wolf Trap show:

I like it...all masters at their craft and the "wanker" comments probably stem from what has been done in the past when "monsters unite".

About quoting material-Stanley has quoted himself on different albums over the years...never an issue IMO as it is all good stuff.

I was at the show and it was killer. Not that I have anything against Hartke, but I did not like Victor's tone. I have seen him 3 times this year, and I heard his Ampeg rig and his Bartolini rig and they were great. But the Hartke rig did not cut it IMHO. Stanley's SWR rig was terrific as well as Marcus' EBS rig. Normally Vic's Fodera is fat yet still articulate, not coming out like that at all through the Hartke gear. You know how you are watching an artist fingers, but you can't discern what he is playing? That was my experiece this week. Interestingly, after the show, other bassist who were present had the same opinion. Victor, if you are reading this, please go back to Bartolini.

Been listening to the CD more and a couple of things strike me, one is Stanley's tone is unmistakable and really outshines the others when he is out front in the mix. To me there is no comparison in Stanely's expressive finger magic. Instantly recognizable to me.

Marcus sounds great until Stanley comes in, then seems pale by comparison, to me.

Poor Victor, comes off a bit muffled in the mix and somewhat sloppy compared to the other two when he gets to do his thing, which feels kind of rushed and overplayed/speed. That's just my opinion, from my last listening experience. listen to them together really re-enforces what a Bass icon Stanley is. Enjoy him as much as you can.

I think you mean Bergantino,I don't think bartolini make amp rigs.Wish they were coming to the chicago area.

It's the opposite for me, It's Marcus's tone on that album speaks to me[even tho it's nothing like my own]. Great stuff either way!;)

Awsome show! Last night SMV absolutely blew the doors off of Long Islands IMAC theater. Stanley ,Marcus and Victor did what they do best in stellar fashion. I was hoping for a good show and they delivered. :hyper: The sound was big and clear. Each bass had a perfect mix so it was easy to hear all the parts and tell who was doing what. Stanley ripped a crazy solo on the acoustic bass that went from classical to jazz to fusion to funk and got a standing ovation. Vic took a solo that only Vic could that left us in shock while Marcus layed down the funk extra thick and tastey! This was NO WANKFEST! Every piece was very well composed and arranged to utilize each bassists strengths and gifts. Marcus layed down the bottom, Stanley weaved in and out on top and Vic filled in the mid. The CD is very strong with quality music not just gratuitous bass playing.

I noticed that Marcus was NOT using his '77 Jazz. He had 2 Signature MM Customs. One Vintage white 4 and the other a sunburst 5 string. I say custom because they did not have his signature on the headstock (yes I was that close). Vic was going through 4 Hartke 4x10 cabs no Ampeg in sight.

again outstanding show! :D

I concur with T-MOST completely. This was an awesome show, and having been to my fair share of G3 Tours, it was in no way a wankfest.

This was my first time seeing Stanley and Marcus in concert; luckily I have seen Victor before.

First and foremost, I came out of this concert wanting to play more bass...not down on myself for what I can't play (as I have after certain other instrumental only concerts). They just looked like they were having a blast up there. The songs were amazingly constructed and you never felt like they were walking over each other....and yes Stanley’s double bass solo was amazing.

Great show!

Saw the Imac show last night, It was worth the wait. Won't get into the details but it was a real feast! The high points for myself were Marcus' Bass Clarinet performance, and Stanley's upright assault, (he was doing windmills toward the end on an upright)! Victor was inspiring as always, Glad to have seen it, Get tix if you can, this is an occurence!

This whole thread is wonderful, especially for those of us on the West Coast (the Frontier).

This is why I am astonished that he's no longer "in the game" on our bass player thread - it is indeed a game, but apparently people thought fit to eliminate Stanley a long time ago. Amazing to me. He's one of the first bassist I ever knew by name and I remember being shocked (way back then) at how young he was, to be so extraordinarily good. He's not that much older than me - but already, when in high school jazz bands, we were worshipping him.

I got to see him with Corea and Barbieri, but I didn't know until recently he was the bass player for the PeeWee Herman's Playhouse show (!)
