Stanley* Marcus Victor (SMV)

I'll be going to the Hollywood Bowl show on Wednesday, a triple bill also featuring George Benson and Sharon Robinson. I was debating whether or not to go, but it seems that ticket sales are poor, and many people are selling their seats below face value. I found good seats for $15 each, and that clinched it! Anybody in L.A. who's free on Wednesday ought to check it out.

Saw the show last night at the Nokia. I took my wife, my son (13) and daughter (9). They were absolutely first rate in every respect. Just an amazing gift to see these guys working together and exploring their musical ideas together. Every once in awhile as they were soloing they would give a look to one of the other guys kind of saying "what do you think? Can you hang with that?" Which of course each other person could and did.

Stanley is a master and is (in the words of my 9 year old), a "True Professional." Actually they all are and the hardest part about the show was trying to figure out who to watch!

Vic's tone came across much better than it seems like he did in earlier shows. Although I am not a huge fan of his switch to Hartkes, they sounded a heck of a lot better last night than when I saw him in April on his solo gig at the Skyline Ballroom. The bottom was much more filled out than it was in April. Some of that may just be the venue.

Marcus and Stanley's tones were excellent and pretty dialed-in.

I think a real highlight of the show was when they were all three standing right next to each other blazing through Thunder and their playing was impeccable and the whole theater was just shaking at the foundation. Everyone within eyeshot just had a mile wide grin.

The only downside is that this show set the bar pretty high for the kids!!

I saw them at the Keswick in Glenside, PA last week.

It was exactly what I needed. Stanley Clarke's upright solo was really inspiring - enough to make me play my upright on a gig Friday night. Derico Watson was great on drums.

The first thing I did when I got home was to get my own bass out to play a little melody I've recently composed. I'm glad I got to see a group of folks doing what they do best.

imp.

i'll be there too! the price is amazing for a concert of this caliber. not to mention you can bring in your own goodies...

I thought it was so very musical. The keyboard player took a couple great solos as well. I thought each guy had his own definite style, they aloud each other to breath and it just was incredible. I thought clearly Marcus and Victor displayed tremendous respect for Stanley, and each other as well....there were dynamics.....room for each of them to do their thing, which is amazing to see with THREE Bass players on one stage. I don't see that with regular line ups enough.

Victor if you see this or someone in his circle does please get him a message to retire the Hartke rig quickly. Caught the show at the Keswick and felt Stanley and Marcus were killin in the tone dept. Victor's sound was so far off what he usually can dial in. It was not a volume issue just the rig is not cutting the mix. Oh, Bergantino where are you???

saw it on the cover of bass player when i was at a bass lesson the other day.
haven't seen it, but it kinda of disgusted me.. its just the G3 of bass players.. and I really don't like when a group of virtuosos just get together to show off... i can't take it seriously... nobody try to convince me that these guys are coming together and creating beautiful music, because that really just is not the case with these things...

just my opinion, kudos to anybody who enjoys this stuff. does nothing for me.

What if it IS beautiful music? The Flecktones are a group of virtuosos, look at what they accomplish. I find it absurd that you'd dismiss an album before it's even available, and before anyone's heard it and been able to comment.

What, there's some limit of one virtuoso per band now?

I had the opportunity to see the show at the Nokia Theatre in New York ... I still can't put it into words what I saw and how I felt and all the excitement that we had in the crowd. They are totally amazing!!! Stanley Clarke did this incredible acoustic bass solo (AMONG OTHER THINGS) that makes me want to put mine down and never touch it again. Marcus is amazing ... Victor is amazing!! I can not put what I saw into words. I still can't believe what I saw. I can't interpret how I felt! Almost spiritual in essence. All night long all I could say was, "UNBELIEVABLE"!!! I ran my battery out of my cell phone trying to take pictures and videos of the show. The Audience was totally mesmerized and we all had a tremendous amount of fun and a bass education. At my stage of the game after the concert, I had to struggle with whether I should continue to play or should I just give it up and enjoy the rest of you guys who play. TOTALLY INCREDIBLE!!! I have no other words ... This is what people mean when they say, "You had to be there" !!!!!

I saw them in NYC @ the Nokia on the 23rd. I agree something bad happened to Victor's tone with the Hartke stuff. I was pretty much in front of him and IMO the sound was muddy, totally the opposite of what I heard when I saw him a million times before. Didn't like it.

I saw them in SF last night.
First of all, Michael Manring opened with three solo bass pieces. I've seen him before, but still remain impressed by his unique vision and voice.

SMV tore it up! They all brought their own bags to this thing, and it was great how they stayed out of each other's way, and played together so seamlessly. And they were having such an obvious good time, it was infectious.

Regarding Victor's tone, I personally thought it was the mix, rather than the equipment, but I could be wrong. He just didn't seem loud enough, much of the time. Also, I was on the side in front of Stanley, and he was going, I think, with a biamped or split rig, and had a little tiny amp on top, which looked to me like a guitar amp...when he played leads, esp. at the end, his sound was rippin' loud. I like Victor's tone....and it wasn't completely obscured, but I wished he would have been a bit more up in the mix much of the time. However, I also think it may have to do with a certain respect he has for those who've come before...it's no secret that Stan was a huge inspiration, and Marcus too, though perhaps less so. In fact, the whole idea for this tour, as Stan Marcus said last night, was born when Vic and Marcus presented Stan with a Bass Player Lifetime Achievement award.

A great show. And props to the Drummer and Keyboardist, both of whom were phenomenal.
