Started My Music Minor

As of this semester of College I have decided to add a music minor to my education (I am majoring in Communication & Rhetorical Studies with another minor is Business Management). So far this has been nothing but an amazing experience. I am enrolled in a music history class where we are studying music from Hellenistic Greeks all the way to a little past Baroque (tons of JS Bach to listen to!). I am enrolled in the university Singers (a choir class where we have about 3 performances per semester), and have been assigned the baritone position. It''s really helping me to diversify the music I'm performing. I am enrolled in Voice lessons (must take 4 semesters of applied instruction to achieve the minor), and it's kicking my butt! But I can already see it helping me in all areas of my musical journey. I am performing in the jazz band with an instructor who has toured the world as a jazz pianist, he's tough but I'm learning a ton; playing out of the real book and also adding in some songs like Bernie's Tune, Jingle Bells and some other christmas tunes for an upcoming holiday pereormcane. Finally, I joined a locally touring band, we are a Hardcore band called False Consciousness and I'm also having a blast doing that!

Just wanted to share what I have going on, being this surrounded by music has definitely changed the way I live my day to day life. Anyone else studying music in school right now? Maybe some tips on how to handle being stretched in so many directions? Thanks!

Congrats on your new music minor! Your excitement shines through your description. Enjoy your new adventure, and remember this great feeling to motivate you in busy times ahead. Adding to your musical knowledge, and broadening your appreciation for music throughout history, will make you a richer person and will augment your enjoyment of music in general. The voice lessons will definitely help you with bass playing, and music in all forms.

I was a music minor for a bit, although I only ended up taking two music courses total. It was really fun, and got me exposed to ear training which helped me a lot. The only advice i can give you is the music minor title isn't really worth much, but the stuff you learn def is. I would say just take the classes you want to take and then drop the minor(unless you're really closed to completing it).
When i started college i used to declare a different major or minor pretty often so i could take classes in different departments. It was fun but I ended up spending an extra year in college for it. I Think it was worth it though.

Congratulations young man when I speak to young people about their educational futures I ask them "Do you want to be a failure in your life? or do you want to be a success in this world?" as you possibly noticed I have several degrees in rhetorical studies. :)

Good for you OP! Wish I had done something similar. I was involved in music all through junior high and high school. But once I hit college I totally ignored it. Wish I had taken some music courses instead of some of the stuff I took.
My son is a junior in college with a double major in music (vocal performance) and mathematics. He loves both and knows that for him the music major won't be his career path but it allows him to study something he is passionate about. He is a bit more fortunate than most though. He is on a full ride academic scholarship and gets paid to be a teachers assistant in the math department. So he will have no student load debt!

I was in a similar situation when I decided to take music as my minor. Unfortunately, the school I attended did not allow music minors to do much of the fun stuff. Only music majors, for example, were allowed to do any applied instruction for credit (no choir, jazz band, etc for minors). Appreciate and enjoy the opportunity to learn and play such a wide variety of music! Sounds like you have a nice balance going on, but be sure not to overextend! :)
