Starting a cover/tribute band from scratch

Here's some photos from a show we did last October (less than one year after I started placing ads looking for musicians and five months after our first show) in Mexico headlining for 14,000 GnR fans for a radio station promoted concert.

Yes, I started the band and the thread in 2008. Still going strong in 2011.

Where did you post the ads to find the people you eventually ended up with?

I am not one of them. I can tell in a song or two if someone will work out, or if I will enjoy working in the band. I guess it's a matter of choice, but IMHO, anything longer than 3-4 songs is just wasting my time.

Agreed - But schlepping gear to play 10 min of music is a non-starter for me. If you're going to audition folks like that, provide a back line.

Craigslist and Backpage are where I posted the ads. It helps that I'm in a major city with many qualified musicians to choose from.

I did provide partial backline (cabinets for guitars and shells and hardware for drums) for the auditions. Note: some hourly rehearsal rooms will do this for you included in their rates.
