Steelsound 2x12 review

My buddy uses Steel Sound, I have played throught them and they sound fine, I was concerned with the price, but after I heard them and watched him throw them around for a few shows I was like well for the money I bet I culd go that route, he loves them he has two of their 2X15 cabs and I belive it is 2 of their 2X12 maybe only one but I think he has two, anyway , I would buy one now that I have played his, I would however proablly go Avatar first, just because of Dave he is great, but for my my Peavey's handle my bottom

I bought a pair of 12" DJ/PA speakers to use for side fills.
Great sturdy construction. Pretty good sound for the price.

Not anywhere near the advertised frequency response but I didn't expect they would. Good efficiency. Week in bass and very strong in the midrange. Tried a bass through them and they'd be OK for a small small club. (the size of a two car garage)

But then - the darn plastic speaker jack on the back is already broken. How can they put together a good plywood cabinet and then cheap so far out on the jack plate that it brings the whole quality down. I can't use one of them until I replace the jack as it is chuffing out the crack. No response from their customer support.

Anybody have a source for metal jack plates?

Oh - and they don't have feet - which is probably OK for PA since they'd normally go on stands.

Update on this.
I wanted to install one of these in one of the cabinets

This amp work good as personal monitors with a little mixer when it's needed.

I took apart the MSC 12" speaker.
There's no internal acoustic damping material.
The plywood is 1/2" it looks like good solid plywood, but it's not faced with birch. Looks more like Luan.

Nails for two of the corners were projecting into the box. They had missed the panel they were nailing into. There was lots of white chalky glue so maybe this made up for it. There was no corner blocking but a cabinet this size may not need it. There are two braces. One on the side running front to back. And one on the back running bottom to top. In order to install the amp I had to rip out the back brace. I just had to reach in with pliers and wiggle it to get it out. So much for the white chalky glue and nails - it's not very strong.

I put in some poly fill and bolted it all back together.
Seems to work pretty well. If I get some time in the future I'll go back in and put in some corner blocks.

I also replaced the jack panel on the other speaker with a nice metal one. Another problem I ran into was that the two jacks on the original cheap plastic jack were too close to each other and didn't let me plug in right angle plugs.

Overall, not bad boxes for the price, but they could use a little refinement. I'll find out in 6 months how well they actually do with wear and tear. There is no customer support so you're on your own. I tried contacting them several times about the bogus plastic jacks and they never contacted me.

Oh Man! You have got to be kidding me!

I'm thinking about the same exact combo as well! I'm glad you like it.

I'm probably going to buy a cab in the next week or so. I'm still undecided on the Amp, but if I can find a used Nitro, that would be my first choice.

Did you get yours used or new? Anything to look at on used ones?

Thanks,
JB

I have the same setup (Firebass instead of NitroBass). It was a good setup until the Firebass popped and was no more. But that is the chance you take when you buy used stuff. I will get it fixed one of thses days. Hopefully it won't be too bad to get it straightened up.

Wow it looks like they went fast again. Try sending a note to [email protected] with "2x12s" in the subject line and asking for their availability. Last couple times I got a reply within a day.

Dawn was laid off by Music Supply Center over the holidays. Apparently their profit margin hasn't been enough to keep her as an employee. They have told her they may hire her back this Spring if business picks up.

I, for one, am very disappointed with MSC over this decision given that Dawn was one of (if not "the") reason I continued to do business with them. While I like their products, a responsible and courteous customer service rep is ESSENTIAL to keeping my business.

If you write MSC for help, you'll have to use the generic email as the "dawn" address won't work.
