Steelsound 2x12 review

Barisaxman said:
So the higher powers at Fedex say that my cabs are going to be delivered today...good thing i'm taking off early from work :hyper: Better warn the neighbors :ninja:

....and the SteelSound club keeps growing and growing. This is fantastic!!!!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

On a similar note, my band, Sonic Prophet, has been hired by the state of Iowa NAACP for a banquet on Saturday....upwards of 600 people there, $250 per person for a 5 piece band. Needless to say, My 210/212 rig will be primed, prepped, and ready to lay down some serious grooves!!! We're starting off with a little jazz and gospel, for the reception and dinner and then slowly work it into a funk-laden throwdown after the keynote speaker!! This is gonna be great!!!! :D Review coming later.

So I've been reading this thread in regards to Steelsounds 212. It sounds like in TB land the are a lot of praise singers. Rightfully so, at the price. But I'd like to share my expirience with Steelsound cabinets and Customer service. I ordered two of their 212 cabinets. I excited like a 12 year old to get them and play. They showed up and I started opening them. The first of my problems with arises, however not a big problem in itself, but on of the cabinets has a different front grill on it. Like I said not a big deal. I contacted their CS through email, got a quick response, after back and forth with emails, they promptly attempted to resolve the problem by sending a matching grill, with that I was satifsied. Problem is the grill they appeared to be a scrap piece because it was two inches too short one way and two inches too long the other. It's been several days since I last heard.

Now for the REAL PROBLEM. Everything was fine, it was only the third time I'd turned my amp on to play through these cabinets. I notice something wrong with the sound. i.e. quite and a horrible distored sound. After inspecting my amp I noticed the bottom cabinet was not working. And the horrid noise was coming out of the top cab. I went about swapping cables, inpts, outputs, and even basses, however no solution. The band needed to get to work so I unhooked the bottom cab, damage already being done. Within about one minute of playing there was no sound whatsoever. After various troubleshooting with the steelsound cabs and my guitar player's cab and head, I noticed that the bottom cab was not working, the top cab was fine, my Ampeg SVT-5 PRO, that I was intending on selling the next week, was not working anymore either. I took the input cup of the bottom cab off to notice that the negative post was no longer connected, it was actually just laying on the positive post. Keep in mind this was because their soldering job was an extremely poor job. After seeing this I opened the other cab up and wouldn't you know I barely touch the wires to check the connection and the same thing happens. I emailed Steelsound and have yet to even hear anything other than they've let their GM know about my situation. That was about two weeks ago.

So here I am with a fried SVT 5 and two brand new cabs that I had to re-solder to get to work. By the way I am the one footing the bill for getting my SVT 5 fixed. Bottom line you get what you pay for, cheap prices = cheap products. A little advice to everyone buying these cabs, buy a soldering iron and redo all the soldering to make sure. If you want something that will show up, be exactly what you ordered, and not malfuction after three uses spend the money and get something else. Or order empty cabs go to www.bltsound.com and get some eminence speakers, cause they are the best, and do the work yourself.

Sorry to hear about your issues, hope your damage is minimal. Hopefully the amp has some protection against an occurrence such as this. I don't know much about them, hopefully someone in the know will pipe in.

You are right, you can't get the quality of $800.00 cabinet in a $139.00 cab. I guess a bad solder joint is possible at any place of manufacture, but also more likely where there is less revenue per cab to spend on QA of their manufacturing process.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I hope it works out OK for your head. I've bounced mine around to a few places, no issues yet, but you can bet I will be taking a look now.

Sorry to hear about your cab issue, Jake.... that's gotta suck.

Based only on MY personal experiences, I have found the customer service excellent and the 212 worth far more than the $180 price point would indicate. I've had it a several gigs and it's performed like a champ....I've got another very large banquest to play for tonight and I know it will be up to the challenge of jazz/gospel to start and ending w/ funk.

Not saying that manufacturing issues don't crop up now and then, but I know for a fact that Dawn would address it promptly to your satisfaction.

hey guys.. ya know im here patrolling!

i do remember this issue .. and i did send it to the techs here and the GM ... and i have not heard back on what to do about this myself, and i will address them again on this issue to see what is said and what i can reply on this. Yes resend the message to me please.. saves me a bit of time searching the issue on this. And yes things do slip thru sometimes on QC and jobs done, we arent perfect, no one is.. but please send it again to my attention so i can present it again to see what can be done.

have a great weekend all .. im outta here!!
Dawn :hyper:

BTW...took just the 210 cabinet to rehearsal last night, and the band was shocked by how good this cabinet sounded by itself. I was running at through one side of the ce1000 at about 1/4 volume and it sounded marvelous. Hopefully I'll have a chance to turn both cabs loose at gig levels. These cabinets were absolutely a blockbuster deal. The folks at music supply center really have a good product. I would not hesitate to buy more of their cabinets, and I probably will be doing so in the future. My only complaint is the same as pretty much everybody elses'...and that's the plastic handles. I can deal with that, it's the sound that was important to me, and I couldn't be more pleased.

Do you have one of the recent models, I have an older model loaded with Knight 10's. IMO the Knight loaded cabs are much better, which gives me an idea. Dawn, you should put in word for offering a Warrior and Knight model of the 2x10 and 4x10 cabs, that would be killer.

Also, can someone who has used a Knight 15 comment on it's sound, I'm thinking of buying a 2x15 cab and retrofitting it with a piezo.

Dawn, can you PM me about the racks when you get a chance?

My 215 (ancient!) retrofitted with 2 Madison Knight 15s :hiding: . The speakers came packaged nice and snug in their styrofoam containers (inside cardboard boxes). My first impression was that they are very heavy duty - they have a cast basket, large magnet, and the speakers seemed very solid. (not to mention heavy) As for the sound.... I'm running 100watts of tube power through them. They are quite capable of shaking things off the wall if you want them to. They sound quite smooth to me, but powerful and punchy depending on your setup and how you play. I got them as an open box special, so I only ended up paying 65 dollars for the pair. This rig was capable of filling a dance hall without extra help from the PA. That probably has more to do with the cab itself, but in my opinion the Madison Knights are a good buy for the money. Bear in mind that my opinion is just that...an opinion. These probably don't sound nearly as good as higher end speakers, but I love 'em.

Just ordered the SS210 to go on top of my Peavey Pro 410. The Peavey is fine as a standalone (8ohms 700watts rms). I've gigged with it once like this and practiced twice with it twice but I figure since the Peavey is 8ohms I might as well take a bit of load off the speakers and add the SS210. With the SS210 I'll be pulling the full wattage from my power amp (1400 watts). Besides...I like the 6X10 setup. I won't really be relying on the SS210 for the lowend as the Peavey has got that covered in spades.

Just an update since I was an early poster in this thread. I've had my 212 for almost six months. I continue to use this unit in a variety of settings with my Firebass 700, from hard rock to worship music, from mush to bright tones. Last night I filled in for 4 hard rock sets at a local nightclub, calling for a strong and punchy mid tone. After dialing it up on my old, cheap yet surprising Zoom BFX-708 (b-man setting), I turned the amp up to 5 gain and 5 volume and left it there all night. It was dang loud and all night I felt those drivers punching out mids through my back. I thought I had a bunch of 10s back there. What a great feeling! Plus the sound guy who we hired told me that it really cut through off the stage. So thumbs up continue with this cab. I've dragged this thing around to numerous practices and gigs and it still looks good, too.

The one problem I ran into was caused by me...I put a cable in the wrong hole in the amp once and it caused a deafening shriek, louder than anything I've heard in the 20 or so years I've been been playing. As a result, one of the drivers didn't work right after that so I replaced it with another Knight.

Too bad they're back ordered on the 12's. Hopefully they'll have some in soon.
