Steelsound 2x12 review

bazzanderson said:
Just ordered the SS210 to go on top of my Peavey Pro 410. The Peavey is fine as a standalone (8ohms 700watts rms). I've gigged with it once like this and practiced twice with it twice but I figure since the Peavey is 8ohms I might as well take a bit of load off the speakers and add the SS210. With the SS210 I'll be pulling the full wattage from my power amp (1400 watts). Besides...I like the 6X10 setup. I won't really be relying on the SS210 for the lowend as the Peavey has got that covered in spades.

Finally got a chance to play it in a band setting. Damn...my guitarists were happy with the sound and pissed that I can get so much louder now. This set-up gives me the volume, deep bass and clarity I've wanted for so long. I don't think I'd ever use the SS210 by itself...but as far as a good extension cabinet goes I couldn't have asked for a better / cheaper alternative. The peavey carries the deep bass and the SS210 seems to carry that as well but carries more mids and highs. Together they move a hell of allot of air I don't have to go past 10am on my master volume to do it.

Well I had my first incident with this cab last night as I was loading up my 4x10 after a gig. I forgot to unplug my speaker cable before picking up my head and *crack* Now I see what everyone complains about with the plastic jack plate! No worries though just te plate broke and nothing else so I machined a plate for it out of cast iron so that shouldn't happen again! :) If it breaks again it's gonna be the jack itself and not the plate! But it did give me a chance to open up and inspect the wiring job and everything looks good at the solder joints, and nice wiring used for it all.

I'm still definately happy with this cab. It sounded GREAT with my GK head on it last night. The bass players from other bands were complimenting my rig and how it sounded. SS 4x10 cab ($200) SX P/J bass ($120), GK 100RB-II head ($600). Not a bad complete rig for under $1k and I was on volume 1.5 on my amp without PA support playing to about 200 and it was pretty loud and crystal clear! I can't imagine how loud it would get if I add a 15 underneath this and pull all 700 watts from the head...wow

be sure to put talk bass in the subject line.. so i know its from you guys!

Dawn,

I took a look at your new site.

You have major spelling and grammar errors all over it,
and unfortunately, that makes it look very unprofessional.

For example, on the home page is says 'formally Steelsound'.
'Formerly' is the right word.

And it just gets worse from there.

Hi Thor

Just a quick clarification on this for you .. I never did the web site or the layouts on there. I was customer service. so as for the errors that was another in the office, but you can contact MSC on that if you like and im sure they would addres that or get it corrected...but i wont be able to do that.. so just shoot them an email and im sure they will handle that for you .

Catch ya all later

Hi guys, Before I saw any of the posts over here I was browsing around ebay and searching for a 2x12 cab. but after reading different experienecs over here and over at T.B. I decided to go for the SS212B. The new girl over there is Dana, and she's pretty cool, I ordered the 212b last monday, with an empty SsSu 15 cab. Gonna stick a Kappa 15c in there. Well now it's Saturday, and Dana, or whoever ships the stuff didn't get my order out till wednesday. Now Im waiting till monday, but I'll cut'em some slack...she charged me 110$ for the ss212, 50$ for the 15cab. and like 20.00 freight because they didn't have exactly what I was looking for...Looks like there's just one little problem... I've been trying to call and order some more stuff, but they will not return calls... *** ?
All in all, I hope everything gets here in one piece. They should have more 212b cabinets right now,, the web site shows them in stock right now.... I'll keep you posted gentlemen... ;)

What really pisses me off is the fact that the first couple calls, are answered, then after the sale, it seems like thers a problem. I don't know. like they should just get someone to answer every call to maintain a presence, or a connection..No biggie I guess, after all it's so flippin cheap. :bassist:

This thread re-surfaced so I need to add something. I bought the Steelsound 212 cab awhile back and honestly, its a really cheap cab. I had posted pics, but mine was 9 ply, not 13 ply as stated and I seriously doubt if it was birch. I just happened to be looking at plywood yesterday and observed that the wood in my cab looks a whole lot like the cheap plywood used to make crates, as opposed to the nice birch plywood I saw over at the shop. The construction in general is not great. The "internal bracing" is just 2 strips of ply and it looks like it slapped together pretty fast. The carpet covering hides voids and nails that stick out and the cheap handles and jack plates have already been mentioned. The tweeter sounds like crap to me, I removed it.

On the technical side. The box is "just" a little bit small for a 212 bass cab of that stlye (IOW, its not a fancy design like a Schroeder) & I know what it states the ratings are on the website. But I bought mine unloaded & worked with a tech at Eminence to find matching speakers. Because of the box size, the Delata Lite 12s were limited to 100 watts total in that box, even though they are rated 300 watts each and the Delta pro's were limited to 300 watts total. Sure it is possible that the cab may be rated down to 38hz and 600 watts with the stock Madison speakers, but I doubt it.

Now overall, sure its "ok" for the dirt cheap price, IMO. But please dont think that these cabs are super high quality, they really are cheap cabs. Overall the cab doesnt sound too bad, but if I had it to do again, I'd probably spend a little bit more and get the avatar 212 which is $279+shipping. But if you are seriously on that "i only have $200" budget, then go for it.

Mine was 13 ply, birch plywood. Construction wasn't tank-like; however, the cab weighed 55 pounds total...about the same weight as my Avatar B210 NEO - pretty nice to carry around.

Mine was solid enough to withstand moving two or three times a week with zero wear. I had none of the "nail sticking out" issues - carpet was applied very well, as were the corners, etc. There was no looseness in the cab at all - felt very sturdy.

As for the tweeter - well, I A/B'd the cab with and without it, and it sounded significantly better with the piezo tweeter attached (to me). The frequency of the tone was rounder and more complete.

Is it a boutique cab? No...however, it stood up in comparison with my Avatar just fine - for 120 dollars less.

Well then I certainly got a piece of crap. The carpet was adequately applied at best. The cab feels solid, but will it withstand years of abuse? I'd have to guess no, but I wont own it long enough to find out. It seriously looks to be glued together with bathroom caulk. Also, Dawn did say many posts back that after some research she found out they had gotten a shipment of 9 ply and clearly they passed it along to the consumer. I paid for a 13 ply birch cab and got 9 ply crate wood. So IMO, its a roll of the dice as to what kind of quality you will be getting from them. I didn't say much before 'cause I only paid like $130 for the empty cab including shipping. But I think its only fair to point out the short comings that I experienced and to make clear that although the tone is not too bad, the SSB212 is a cheap cab at a cheap price, IMO (of course).

Not trying to start any arguments...interestingly enough, however, it's fairly constant when looking at reviews at Harmony-Central, etc. that the unloaded cabs get pretty bad reviews, and the loaded SSB212's get great reviews. I'm wondering about the construction "pipelines" for the two products.

That is very interesting & I was not aware of that fact. One would think that they would make sure the unloaded version would actually match the description since you can SEE inside the thing before the speakers are loaded. Mine is not a bad looking cab if you dont see the innards or inspect the carpeting job closely. Its not a bad deal for under $200, but I would still spend a bit more for better quality had I to do it again. But I think I already said that...
