Steelsound 2x12 review

Wanted to let anyone know who has been keeping tabs on this thread that I am very happy with this cabinet. Had a little horsey riding accident and broke three ribs :bawl: , hence the delay in posting.

Whether it is 9 or 13 ply, I'm not giving it back. I would say my impression is about the same as VincenzaJay's, but I will give a complete review as soon as I can. I am powering it with a Peavey Firebass 700 that I bought for $200.00 locally. It is quite decent for a total investment of $380.00. Volume is not a problem and as GSPLBASSDC mentioned in one of his posts, there is indeed some serious rumbling to be had.

Sorry to hear about the accident, but it's great you're enjoying the 2x12....ya gotta pretty decent rig for less than 4 bills!!!!

Well, I hope it's not becuase if I play a low B with the Firebass wide open that two magnets may come shooting out from the cabinet! If so, I want to know so I can get it pointed in the right direction (ex wife and ex in-laws) before I let it rip. I guess for that I would need a 3 x 12.

You'll enjoy the 700...I own one as my primary amp. The 212 is a nice all-round cab to use with it. I've never pushed it past 5/5 gain/volume in my concrete basement when messing around, and a 3/4 is the highest I'll go in a bar (wood floors resonate nicely). To satisfy a testosterone fit during one gig I threw a 15" under the 212 and it was just plain ugly :p But the 212, the 700, and basic effects is all I really use now.

Edit: plus the low B on my 55-01 sounds pretty through the 212 too.

Thanks for the INDEPTH reviews guys; that's a lot nicer than how you liked one or two things. This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. As soon as I can contact a person at the company, I'm going to probably order one.

Does anyone have info on which cabs are 8ohm? Or can be run 8ohm? Or to better phrase it, what would be best 2Xsomething I could get for an Ampeg SVT 400T ? Thanks.

You're welcome...and glad you find the reviews helpful.

"Which cab is better" kinda depends on what and where you play. If you're looking for one all round cab, I highly recommend the 2x12 Of course, if your style requires more punch than booty, then go for 4x10. I personally have a 2x10 to sit on top of my 2x12 for most of my gigs, but I do a TON of church stuff that I only need the 2x12...and it handles things like a champ!!!

Here's the link to find out more...and Dawn is really good @ helping you out:

I'm looking for something as low priced as I can. I e-mailed them a couple times this weekend, so I'm still waiting for a reply from there. I'm looking for something under 200 shipped. I'd like to do 2x12, but 2x10 would work. I just don't know what would work at 8 ohms or 2x4 ohms.

As previously mentioned. MSC is temporarily out of 2x12's, but here's info on the 4x10.

If your head can get to 2 ohms, then by all means go for 2 cabs @ 4 ohms each. I have Kustom GrooveBass 1200 that goes that low, and with my 2 4 ohm cabs, I can pull almost all 1200 watts out of the sucker compared to 800 watts from a 4 ohm load.

The things we have to do to punish guitar players and their 100 watt combo amps!

LOL....my guitarist's Marshall half stack quivers when I roll the big boys out...

kinda like this............. :bawl: :help: :spit:

they know some serious funkin' is about to be had.

.......and Dawn, I was just funnin' ya. Keep up the good work, and we'll keep spreading the news...feels good to be among the first to talk up a good cab at a great price!

Well, Alice, the Firebass and the 2x12 are going to make their first public appearance this evening at the local blues jam. :hyper: I'll have to get their about 2 hours early so my ribs can recover from hauling that Firebass around! I guess in my case it is a good thing it is lopsided. At least I can put the heavy side on the side of the body where the ribs are still intact!

I think just for fun (and cause I have a little money) I'm gonna get a Sadowsy outboard pre to spice up the MIM Jazz for the event!

I will do it. I am pretty sure the cab willl be OK, no worries there. Since I bought the Firebass used, I'm a little concerned since it hasn't been played for an extended period of time at serious volume. There will be a backup GK setup there in case of the worst. In all of these years, I never have had an amp croak on me in the middle of a gig, so I guess I have been lucky.

The 2x12 went out to play last night and much fun was had.

The event was a blues jam at a small club that can hold maybe 50 or 60 people. Of course the guitar player has his amazingly loud combo amp with a second small cabinet and mikes it through the PA system (where do these guys get the balls?). It is a small place, but it is a loud place. There is also a combo amp setup for the pipe guys which, of course, is miked through the PA. I had gotten there early and set up and the house band bass player was late so we decided to use my rig for the night. BTW, the two setups that normally get used in this venue are either a GK 4x10 and a GK 700 watt head at 4 amps or an Eden World Tour setup with two stacked 4 x 10's. Pretty good stuff to compare with my $400.00 rig. When I talk about tone, these are what I am comparing to.

The Firebass was at the limit when things really got going with just the 2x12. The overload protection was coming on pretty regularly. However, that is not the cabinet's problem. I can tell you that this cabinet has some unbelievably rich bottom end and was making my chest pound while I was listening to the house band. It isn't mud like when you cut the treble and play up by the neck, it is very clear. We tweaked it for awhile to get more mid with some success, but I don't believe I will get there with just the 2x12. We also tried the GK head on the 2x12, which was better yet. I think I can maybe get a little more with some more tweaking, but I think the real answer will be a 2x10 stacked on the 2x12. For this particular venue I needed a little more volume anyway and I think the tone stuff would have been easier with some 10 inch speakers involved. I don't think I want to go straight 10's though, the 2x12 really has a nice bottom end and I don't want to lose that, I just want to add some more of the other.

Only time will tell about the durability of the cabinet, but if the 12" tone is what you need, I don't think you will regret buying one of these. You certainly get a lot for the money. All the players that used it liked it, especially for the $$$ involved, so I am happy. Good job MSC.

I wonder if we can convince MSC to build a 21012 cab for those reasonably volumed gigs (if there is such a gig any longer)?

Now we need someone to review the SSB-210LE.

Also, is there any reason I can't add a set of casters to this cab? I need something to roll that Firebass around on.

Great review...and it seems like you found out the same things I have. The 2x12 is a good cab, but lacks slightly in the "punch" area. Going w/ a 2x10 on top , I have found, definitely rounds out the tone and allows me to pull more watts out of my GrooveBass for a fuller, richer sound (also looks very imposing :smug: ).....I'd recommend it in your situation as well.

As far as casters are concerned, you can pick up a set @ Lowe's, Home Depot, etc...around $15/set of 4 for the normal bolt on's, but I go with the removable casters (the plate is the only thing fastened to the cab and the casters slide and lock into the plate)....saves on wear and tear on the bottom of your cab!
