Steelsound 2x12 review

vicenzajay said:
If you're asking about the Avatar B210 NEO, it's a super cabinet as well. I wrote a review for that cab both on Harmony Central and here on this site as well.

I strongly recommend the crossover upgrade from Gary here on TB (search this forum for avatar crossover upgrades). I have no experience with the new crossovers from Dave at Avatar...but I'm sure they're an improvement as well.

Jay

Jay- are you recommending Gary's crossover upgrade for the steelsound 212 cab? i was just curious how the NEO speakers in general performed. I am getting a pair of Delta Lites as part of my endorsement deal with Eminence and decided to try them out in the steelsound SSB-212 cab.

Sorry,

Misunderstood the question. I'm a big fan of the NEO speaker's, and not just for weight reasons (although that helps). They are (to use a subjective word) very transparent speakers. Obviously the 10's will have a slightly different timbre than the 12's; however, my .02 worth is that you'll be very pleased - especially as far as frequency response and efficiency are concerned. Just guessing, but I think the resultant sound will be very punchy and "present".

If you do wind up putting them into that cabinet, please let me know how it works out. I'm not a cabinet design guy, but I would assume that the cabinet's tuning would remain constant - should keep everything stable as far as overall performance is concerned.

Hope this helps...pretty subjective, but I think it should work out fine (might even shave some more pounds off the cabinet's already fairly light weight).

I havent had to complain about anything, but putting the first one of these 3 options (below) in the subject line had always gotten me a reply within 24 hours. Guess yours would be #3. I also called today and Dawn picked up the phone. Hope this helps.

1. RES CINDY- general questions not answered any where else

2. RES CINDY- EBAY- for questions on an ebay auction that are NOT answered in the auction

3. COMPLAINT- if you need to formally email a complaint or if something is missing from an order or... general complaint
if you sent an email thru EBAYS email system , that wont make it thru the filter. please resend with one of the subject lines from above.

I did #3 initially thinking it would get her attention. But I just called and spoke with Dawn, who was very pleasant, and she explained what I needed to do. Basically if there is a manufacturer's defect, they'll cover it, but if the voice coil is fried, then it's not.

What happened was that I was practicing with the Firebass 700 head with the 2x12 cab and a 1x15 under it. Volume was at a 3.5 and gain was the same. Suddenly I began to hear a fuzz coming from one of the speakers, as if I gave it a little overdrive. The other speaker was clear as day, but the other one had the fuzz. After messing around at much lower volume and playing with a couple of basses, the fuzz was still there (other speaker still fine) and concluded that I had a problem.
I've gigged and practiced with the unit many times in the past few months, and have kept volume reasonable. But I've had a few accidental cord "pops" and put a cord in the wrong hole once and the resulting noise could have contributed, but we'll see. I'd think most speakers would be able to hold up to a few "accidents." But nevertheless if I'm at fault I'll probably order another Knight and give it another chance.

Moral of the story...Phone first with SS. Dawn's very nice to speak with.

well the good news for you is those speakers are dirt cheap.

i went back and forth as to which Eminence speakers to load into the SSB 212 and decided to give the Delta Lites a shot. The wattage, sensitivity, impedence and freq response is perfect for me. its also will be under 50 lbs loaded so i can put it on a plane as luggage. hopefully it will sound good too. :) i will have it home at the beginning of October & will update after i give it a workout.

Howdy howdy all...

Hi Jay, it took me a while to send it in. I actually shipped it last Thursday, so it should arrive today perhaps. They told me that it would take about a business day to test the speaker and let me know if the warranty applies. I have a 15" cab I've been using for church, and it's been a good replacement while the 2x12 is out of commission.

I'm heading out to volunteer down south on Wednesday, so I'll update when I get back early next week.

Take care,

Ralph

FedEx says that my SS212 is in and ready to be picked up!!! I'll get it hooked up to The Avatar B210 and the Groove Bass.. and then tell my wife and kids to leave the house (or watch out for falling plaster). I'll have the whole rig out for the first time on October 2, so I'll post later

Y'know, I really like Avatar, but I can't help but think that the way MSC is handling their business and building good cabs is the way Avatar started out....and look at where it got them!!

My equipment list will tell you I'm not a gear snob, I look for the best bang for the buck and great tone......MSC (SteelSound) looks like it's getting the job done.

Word of mouth....it's a powerful thing!!!

Let us all know how it works out! Your speaker array will be remarkably similar to mine!

Wondered if any of the Steelsound users wanted to chime in one last tine before I plunk down the Amex

Bump

You already know how I feel...like this :hyper: ...and this :D ...and sometimes this :spit:

It's a really nice cab w/o breaking the bank...can't help but think this is how Avatar got it's following. Now if I played bass for a living, I'd probably have something different (Epiphani, Bergie's EA, etc)...but then I'd be making more $$$ and might even get an endorsement deal anyway.

3-4 months of playing out with this cab, and I'm still very satisfied. I wouldn't worry about buyer's remorse at all.

Not wanting to hijack this thread I started - however, I've got to say that I bought an Auralex Gramma Pad to put under this cab, and WOW - helps a lot with those crappy club "raised" stages that go boom, boom with every bass note. I think I'm going to work on reverse engineering them as I'd love 4 more (in order to put my PA sub/stacks on top of them as well. The isolation riser really tightened up everything nicely!

Rich's Alice - let us know how it all works out!

bump, any head recomendations? i was thinking about the ashdown 300h (its only 300 watts though?) because i like the simple layout, definitley getting a 212

I think thats it because im on a tight budget, and i will upgrade heads later when money is steady, kind of sucks it wont be at full capacity, but i think it will still cut through my band.
