I can't say with certainly that the pickup route is the same with recently-manufactured basses, as Gibson could have changed it. My basses are around 20 years old, from the MusicYo era. I do know the pickup dimensions are the same on my Spirits, from 4-string to 5. Cost containment - one pickup for all models. The string spacing on the XZ-25s is pretty tight.

Also, if you are considering HBCS, call or email EMG and ask them about fit.

Maynor, what year is your Spirit? Is it new?

I do remember the Select widths being 2.75", both four and five, which agrees with the EMG HBCS chart that Barticus provided.

I'll have to check the serial number when it gets in. It's in pretty mint condition from the photos, and has the "steinberger" logo pickups so that leads me to believe it's a newer model, maybe 15 to17 range?

Barticus, those photos in your earlier post are what I have been going on until the bass arrives and I can actually measure it. very helpful, thanks for posting!

I notice on EMGs website, the HBCS has a note that it has been replaced by the EMG35 for production. Will EMG still make the HBCS or is it now phased out?

They are super responsive, I’ve had to call them several times for custom configurations, drawings and technical questions etc. just give them a call and you’ll get an immediate answer. 800 821 1446

I put in a call and they are looking into it for me.
He said for 5 string, they typically have to do a 7 string humbacker size but for bass.

OK, the Chestbow came in. Got it mounted and gave it a test drive.

Nope. Not nearly as good as simply mounting the rear button on the back of the bass. I was hoping the chest bow would move the bass an inch or two to the right when it hangs on the strap, but it didn't.

Back it goes.

Finally got the XT25 in. Needs new strings and a good setup, but nonetheless plays fine considering. I'm going to leave as is while I travel with it next month, then likely have some new electronics ready to go when I get back.

Electronics are definitely dull. Not a terrible sound, but no oomph whatsoever. Size is 38mmx 79mm, and the EMG H7 size should fit just fine. Talked to EMG and they said they could do a set of 60-7 humbuckers but tuned for bass. I'll explore some options but that may be the easiest route.

Not gonna lie, for a $400 little canoe paddle, these things have some serious mojo. I've been playing on it for an hour or so and when i boosted the gain on my interface to actually hear it, it has some decent tone.

I also must confess to playing "The Promise" by When in Rome a few times.

Check out Tone Monster bass preamps on eBay, they help wake up the stock pickups.

I couldn’t find one but admittedly I didn’t try yelling either. I found the date of my XZ’s creation in the neck pocket - it’s just slightly more difficult to do that with the XT series.
