For those interested......

There's a link on their website to a frequency response graph comparing the tonestyler to standard tone control.

As you can see, it's not very easy to read, but if you click on the Invalid Link Removed (which is a PDF) it's a lot clearer.

I'm still sitting on the fence about the Tonestyler I installed in my own Precision bass.
I like it wide open, or maybe one or two clicks from wide open.
But the rest of the positions I don't like/use, but mind you, I've always loved a bright bass sound.

Can nobody like anything a lot without it looking like "religion"? That, to me, implies not doing any thinking of your own.

Anyway, Don likes to use a 30k resistor and not 15k. But yeah, that's basically what it is as you describe.

Here's one I did going from wide open on the Bass Ten to all the way off in increments of 3. Unfortunately, I didn't include the position I use for almost everything, which is two from full-on. It's a little brighter than the second clip...sounds most like the 5k rolloff I get from an SVT/810, whereas the one I recorded sounds more like the 4k rolloff I get in a B-15.

Oh right.. I'm using two hexabecimal switches (4bit) with a push pull for a bit extra giving me 9bit switching, 0-90nF in 220pF steps. That's about 450 combo of switching, was so I could drop down to of Dolganoff Mega tone and still use my tone, switch between the two.

I may have missed this, but does this thing work in conjunction with the tone pot, which means you pick the cap value with the Tonestyler, and the amount of interaction with the tone control? Or does it replace the tone pot, and each setting is fully rolled off, so to speak?

You can do it either or. My Precision is currently wired with a Tonestyler and a volume/tone stacked pot. The tone knob doesn't do much at all on the first 3 or 4 brightest TS settings but provides some extra interactions on lower settings. One thing cool that it does that the TS won't do by itself is sound just like a stock Precision with the tone knob all the way down. But it's coming off when I get a chance to pull it because it's dark enough for me with the TS turned all the way down and I couldn't really find any other useful settings except that one.

But that's me...you might enjoy them.

Thanks Jimmy. I've been thinking about getting one ever since I converted my jbass to passive. Currently the 4th hole in the control plate has a second output jack installed in parallel with the original. Did you remove the cap from the original tone pot?

I didn't wire up the harness...Stellartone did. I'm terrible with wiring and I couldn't tell you. All I know is that there's a 30k resistor added that allows a little extra bleed-in of highs as to not make the TS settings sound so dramatically rolled off as it would without it.

I'm a little confused Jimmy.
Are you going to remove the stacked volume/tone or the TS?

I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer...so apologies if this has been discussed and I missed it.

Ok, dumb question: How does the Tonestyler Bass Duo Ten that's designed to work with two pickup instruments function when only one pickup is being used? Any difference in performance? I go front p.u. only about 80% of the time with my jazz-ified franken-P and I'm curious about this.

The Duo 10 controls each pu separately with the same pot, different frequencies rolled off on the neck and bridge pu when each pu is at 100%.

If you're only using one pu it only functions for that pu at it's predetermined assigned frequencies, 10 total for that model.

I do believe that the new versions eliminated the largest cap that the old 16 position ones had, 0.100F

I picked up one of the very last original Tonestylers and that last position, while attenuated volume-wise, definitely is in dub land.

I had it put in this bass:

I bought a six position version for a semi-hollow that should be finished in a month or two so I can see how the last position(s) compare.
