A quick note to the moderators of this forum:

I want to thank you guys/gals for being very, very cool! I've been posting on some of the guitar forums, and I must tell you, I've never encountered so much $*%(^&! before.

My posts get moderated to death, edited every which way...OyVey!

So, to the moderators, thank you for allowing me to be frank in my posts, even if some of them may borderline (on rare occasion) as advertising my brand. It's refreshing to have this freedom while posting.

Or maybe it's just that bassist are cooler...who knows!

so I've been digging around this thread but cant find an answer. Did anyone figure out if its the pickup or preamp thats hot? I'm looking to replace one or the other to fix the issue but I dont wanna buy a preamp then find out its the pickup.. or vice versa. There was talk about it but I dont think I caught a definitive answer. If there was I missed it. thanks

--It's both.
But, I lowered the pickup on mine, and I can dime the volume without clipping--as long as I go into the active/pad input on the bass amp. I can' t dime the volume on my p-bass with aftermarket pickups (even though it's passive). I do use a bit of compression too, but that's more of a tonal preference, not because it's needed.

I just received my SUB Ray 4 this week. Absolutely love it. I already own an OLP version of the MusicMan bass and this SUB was meant to supplement it not replace it. However, the SUB is so much smoother to play and sounds so much better that the OLP has been listed on eBay. I wish I had to vocabulary to explain in detail the countless things that make it far and away a better bass than the OLP version but sadly I don't. I am extremely impressed that they could make this fine of a quality a bass at this price range. It plays and sounds like a much more expensive bass...which is exactly what the reviews on Youtube said, but I assumed that was more sales pitch than fact. I was expecting so much less than I got. Turns out those guys on Youtube were telling the truth. Needless to say, I am very happy with this purchase. It has been a long time since I have been this happy after parting with hard earned cash.

Hi guys, I didn't read the whole thread (as it is pretty big) but I have a quick question. Is anyone here using their unmodded Ray4 with a sansamp? I'm wondering if this bass is too hot for it, as it has made most of my pedal board completely irrelevant (which is only okay because I'm loooving the tone through my GK, I just wish I could get it it a hair grittier).

I'm thinking the rackmountable RBI to be specific, thanks!

Thanks a ton, I keep getting suggestions to change out the electronics if I'm using effects, but I actually really like the way these sound stock, so that idea kind of scares me. Good to know if I pull the trigger on a sansamp it won't be super fuzzed out like my current overdrives.

I thought I had read some string suggestions, but what have you guys that bought the S.U.B. Ray5 replaced the stock strings with.
I was thinking the EB Power Slinky's with the .135 B.
Would I have to do anything with the nut?
Thanx in advance for any suggestions.
Looking for a nice MM rock growl and thump, think AC/DC and Aerosmith.

you wanna make a Ray sound amazing?? get Ernie Ball Cobalts. i have them on my EBMM Stingray 5 and SBMM Ray35 and both sound AMAZING. im sure they'd do just as good on a SUB.

Which one? The lighter or darker?

Also, they should all be available in rosewood or maple, rather than only black and maple.

And you should make sure musiciansfriend doesn't ship them out in a single box with only a thin tissue paper wrap for padding and nothing else, much like this:

It actually says a lot about the build quality if it made it from California to New York without a scratch, shipped like this.
