Nice bass JHanley. I have the same one and am very happy with it. Gets equal time with my SR4 HH. I've also thought about switching out for a maple neck. I was thinking you could post here to see if any of the Black w/ maple sub owners would like a dark neck on their dark body. Win Win. Watch out thought, pre and pup are way hot.

New preamp and pickup. While the stock electronics are usable they are definitely NOT pro quality.

Not the answer I was wanting to hear! :scowl:

If I need to put another 200-300 into the bass I might do just as well to put the money towards a Ray34 or Ray34ca. Then again, this will be a backup for my Ray35, so it might not matter as much if the electronics are usable as is.

My Ray5 doesn't have a "too hot" problem. And while the electronics may not be "pro quality," they are certainly "pro usable," at least until you tear the cheap battery connector apart while changing the battery.

Normally, I would suggest avoiding active electronics in a bass that sells for less than $500. The Ray5 is an exception to this.

I believe he was referring to the SUB series and NOT the Ray35

I think the preamp is the HOT output problem and not the pickup. If that is true, then I'd switch the preamp first.

awesome video!

I love it when I see people using "cheaper" instruments so well: you don't need to spend a lot to play great music.

Thumbs up! :)

I can't say what upgrades would be best, since I don't have direct experience of your bass, I'm afraid. What I'd say is that I really really like the Seymour Duncan SMB4A pickup. I owned several OLP basses and tried various pickups, and the SMB4A was the best of the lot. Really powerful but balanced, big bottom and punchy. Better -in my opinion- than the more expensive Nordstrand MM4.2

bought today ray4 walnut satin 2nd hand.
for more then a new in the USA.. but this how it his here about everything..
first impressions are good.
the feel, built and sound are great.
action was high and neck relief was need some setup. but no problems. very easy. the nut wheel is great!

i had 91 Musicman stingray for 11 years and sold it, but said to myself that i will have stingray again someday.
i believe that ray4 will do.

i cant compare the sound because that stingray had 3 band preamp and the ray have 2. but the essence of the stingray sound is there.

i'm in love..
