Please, let me share with you my own experiences about the topic!
I have the same problem like the other bassists: my hands are often sweat in live gigs. Mainly, if I have some flap or the temperature and/or humidity of the club (or open-air) is not suitable. Or these things are all together
The point is, I have always looking for something that is effective against sticky fingers and strings. I read a lots of topics about the problem and tried some suggests and hints how to eliminate this annoying thing. Ive tried baby powder on my hands but I didnt like it. My sweat mixed together with the powder and stuck on the fingerboard, around the pickups, the portions of bridge etc. And it was a bit inconvenient feeling playing with baby powder on my hands. My hands looked horrible after I played. So I started to thinking about oils. Oils are good, because they make your hand greasy and not weat off your hands as the baby powder does. I was thinking about some fret cleaner thing, because they contain mineral oils that helps the problem. I have an old GHS FastFret, but I dont use them since Im using Elixir strings on my bass. I dont need for it. Or I just thought I didnt!
So It is true, I dont need to clean the strings, I have to make them greasy, however. So I searched for my FastFret, but I find out that was all dry. I could feel its orginal smell, however, and it was a good sign. I deicided that I fill it up with something oily. I was thinking what should I use for that? Vegetable oils are not suitable. They go off and will sticky and stink. And maybe they are harmful for the hardwares. Engine oils and lubricants are dont damage the hardwares (they do with your skin!) but dirty and smell horrible, just like vegetable oils. So I decided that I will fill this applicator with some baby oil. Baby oils are made from mineral oil (paraffin oil or glycerol) in general. They dont harm for the stings and bass, and dont harm for skin. I bought a baby oil and filled up my FastFret applicator and tried. The cleander worked well, it made the strings clean and greasy. Of course, I wiped off the overplus oil.
Im gonna testing this method in a gig tomorrow night and Im curious how will it work in a real situation. But Im convinced about the first try. It works well (for me).
