Just for fun, let's share our personal "dream" panel of judges! They can be living or deceased.

I think of the story Guy Pratt told of recording with Madonna for “Like a Prayer.” She sang a guide vocal while he, along with others, were laying down their tracks, when she finished, she gave them feedback on what keep or change about their parts. She did not have to listen to the playback. Whether we like their music/presentation or not, tops stars are often very good at what they do.

She knew exactly what she wanted. If she'd been able to, she would have written a score with parts for them.

I've never been a fan of the singing contest shows, and one big reason is that the contestants and judges are always drawn from the glossy, superficial realms of popular music.
I've always hoped in vain for judges like, say, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Chrissie Hynde, Betty Carter, Nick Cave, Neil Young, Meshell...
Someone who might say, "Your pitch is accurate... but you're saying nothing. NOTHING!!!"
Sting is at least a small step in that direction.

The shows are for entertainment and enjoyment. Don’t tell people what they are “supposed to like.”
If a producer has an idea for a stupid tv show that people watch and they sell enough advertising to make a profit… good for them.
Do you really believe having Joni Mitchell analyzing the intellectual substance of a singer’s performance would make for a better more enjoyable show? ….maybe? But probably not.

Agreed. These shows aren't made for musicians or people that actually care about music. They're made to entertain, and the banter between dudes like Adam Levine/Blake Shelton/Snoop Dogg delivers entertainment.

Dogmatic? No, I just have tastes and standards, like everyone else, and I was only sharing what would make these shows tolerable for me.
All of the musicians that I mentioned are (or were) iconoclasts, and ideally they would praise young contestants who revealed something of themselves, rather than praising the ones who were striving to be conformist, unimaginative clones.
Now, THAT would be entertainment and enjoyment for ME.
