Am I the only person surprised that Sting has agreed to be a judge on the Voice? He always had such a cool image and the Voice strikes me as corny. I imagine it pays really well.

He's not a judge, just a secondary "mentor" for one pre-recorded round. The actual coaches reportedly currently make ~$13 million each per season.

Probably also looking to increase his reach. Face it, other than for bassists, he is out of the public light.
His net worth is around 300 million- so I don't think he is doing anything for money...
I find it to be pretty lame. Maybe Sting just wants to be in the public crosshairs more frequently. Other than seeing clips mocking the show and a couple of commercials, you won't see me watching that.
Getting a few million to increase your visibility makes sense to me. I guess Sting is being practical.
He's been in the game for almost 50 years. At 73 years old, does he need more visibility?
Your guess may be right. I do not profess to "know", but it is certainly true that for some, having more money than one can possibly spend does not diminish the drive/desire to obtain even more.....and a lot of famous people with big egos tend to yearn for the spotlight after it loses them for a bit.

Many people, performers in particular, are "needy" of attention/adulation/fame.
Let him do what he wants. It's probably a large sum of money for very little work, and who among us wouldn't make the same choice if it were offered? Maybe he's putting that dough into his charitable work, or financing his grandchildren's education. Who cares? And if it inspires some youngsters to check out the Police, so much the better. I've heard music from The Clash on car commercials and Green Day is shilling for Keurig. The whole "rock n roll shouldn't sell out" thing went out the window decades ago...
Let's not pretend like Sting isn't a pop star like any other, doing what pop stars do. It's nice work if you can get it.

It's not an issue of selling out. It's just a lame forum to get visibility if that's what he's seeking. At this point, he's not going to become more successful or famous because of The Voice (or anything else for that matter).

(Adding, we just saw him in 2023 in Slovakia with the full band and it was a fabulous show. Tickets were affordable!)
Those 400-year-old estates take a lot of upkeep. And, he's got at least a couple of them.
Everybody needs to fill up their days. Most of us fill them up with money making pursuits, at least up to a point in our lives. Some of us who have earned the right fill them up with the things they enjoy. Others fill them with nothing, which I understand to be a very bad idea.
Sting is touring right now and I read that his tour is doing well enough. He released an album “The Bridge” a few years back that really wasn’t that good. His voice is holding up but now sounds like the voice of an aging man, which it is. I’ve been a fan of his music all the way back and I am still amazed by the beauty and complexity of what he wrote and performed. I’ve seen him live eight or ten times going back to the early 90s. Once about 20 years ago my wife and I went all the way to London to see him because that sounded like a fun adventure. It was before we had kids. It was indeed a fun adventure.
Sting has done enough if he feels like he has. Maybe being a guest mentor on The Voice sounds like fun to him. Why not.
