Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 13: The Lost Thread

Believe it or not, I'm not the biggest fan of drone bands/projects. But Drone done well is pretty awesome (IE early Boris, some Sunn, Earth 2) but I find it annoying that lately it seems like any one who has a fuzz pedal will play a riff for 3 minutes and call it a Drone band/song/project. Really same goes with Noise, when it's done well it can be awesome, but there is a ton of crap out there too.

Drone should be suffocating, dense, slow, completely engulfing, and most importantly loud.

end of mini rant.

No way man you need to check out real drone like LaMonte Young, Reich etc that stuff will blow your mind. Anyone from the SF minimalist camp really. That stuff is drone. A bunch of loud guitars and fuzz pedals just takes influence from that.

French just sounds so smooth and mellow makes me wonder how to French people argue? lol

I guess that's something that everyone feels for a foreign language.

English is much more musical to me than french which is really bland as we don't have any kind of emphasis on syllables.

And when we argue we do not sound smooth or mellow :D (but it's not as bad as Germans !)

On another note, I can't stop listening to this split :

Might be up your alley Samsquanch !

I'm picky with Noise and Drone too.
You like Nadja at all, Ron?

I do, I saw them a few years back it was pretty cool from what I remember. I know I've got a record or two and a couple of splits of theirs too.

Hipsters taking over drone now?

Well I wear skinny jeans and plaid shirts regularly, I also need to get glasses soon. Most people seem to be pretty upset when they see that Bongripper isn't a bunch of old metal dudes. I just find it annoying that anyone with a distortion pedal and a guitar or bass just thinks that playing one riff over and over makes them a drone band. I guess it does technically, but then they are just a ****** drone band.

I never really got into much of the drone stuff. What I really can't stand is all this hipster fad satan occult crap. Some of the music is so horrible.

Most of the drone stuff I like is from bands that will actually play something outside of the drone, I like a drone that leads into a song or big riff or something.

Also what's wrong with songs/albums about satan? :hiding:

I'm not a fan of drone associated with doom metal or sludge. More specifically, SUNN and any act that has aped them and let that define "drone" as a genre. It comes across to me like someone was satirizing the doom metal genre, then eventually just dropped the irony and took it seriously. Like Andrew Dice Clay and his character, how it started out a joke on people who acted like that, then made him popular and famous, so he just became that guy. I wouldn't slag anyone for liking it or playing it. I just don't know why it's associated with metal in general and doom metal specifically, other than a vague sense of "metal" aesthetics and being slow. Which taps that annoying stereotype of "doom metal is just slow metal". The same way people call Ghost doom metal, but I've already given that rant before.

I can't shake the feeling that if SUNN hadn't taken off at all, they would have just shrugged it off as just taking the piss. Since it did take off somehow though, they kept doing it and kept taking it more seriously.

Also, I haven't had any coffee this morning. So grumpy man is grumpy.

Yeah I don't get the Sunn thing, couldn't get through a minute of listening to them. Reminds me of let's be a punk band because we don't know how to play. Like a cop out.

it has nothing to do with being able to play. they dont even have a drummer. their whole point as a band is to create an atmosphere, and whether youre into or not or bored or not, they achieve that 100%. ive listened to one sunn album once all the way through, it was tough. ill listen to a song here or there, but its not usually my thing.

however, their tone and the moods they can create with all those sounds and structures is pretty friggin sweet. they might shrug it off like its a joke, but they take that stuff seriously. its all mapped out very precisely and orchestrated to a T.

I am going from Such Hawks and Such Hounds, where the bassist was talking how he couldn't play, maybe he was joking. I get the whole ambient thing, I love Tortoise, Radiohead, etc. You dig em you dig em
