Stoner / Doom Bassist Thread - Part 18

I like Ihsahn, but am more a fan of his work in Emperor, especially the final album, than his solo stuff.

LOL!!! Okay, I was trying to be a leeeetle more diplomatic than that.
That said, I do watch the videos on Youtube because I think they are a hoot.
lol i was just kidding. i dig some of the bad recording stuff but not most of it. i do enjoy old mayhem somehow, but thats about as far as i go with "lets record in this cave and kill each other" black metal. but for some reason black metal creates this atmosphere that i really like, definitely makes up for most of the horrible playing and poor recording.
On Black Metal...
My general progression into music was classic rock / metal (Sabbath/Zeppelin) to more contemporary mid 90's metal, then into independent punk and hardcore... All of that late 90's stuff Earth Crisis, Strife, AF etc... So naturally, a few of my friends / bandmates had really gotten into grind and black metal though I understand them to be very different genres... Neither of which was ever really my style...
I can get behind the culture that exists in the black metal community, even though it's become quite trendy. Naturally, I have a handful of albums from emperor, dark throne, etc, which i would classify differently than stuff like cattle decapitation, suffocation, etc... but they don't get much play these days.... The technical guitar work is blistering but for some reason I just can't relate.... go figure. If I want metal I'd rather throw on some old Slayer.
When I started playing bass at 14 I began to reintroduce myself to my adolescent roots... RHCP, Classic Rock.... When i moved to Atl I became less interested in hardcore, and made a lot of friends in the NOLA funk / jam scene....
Stoner Rock was naturally a good medium... Heavy and driving but opened up and jammed out... Not to beat a dead horse, but earthless is like my most perfect fit... I got a little off topic, but that's my personal experience with black metal.

I'm way hit and miss with black metal. When it hits I absolutely love it, but some of it is just so, so awful...
And frankly, the douchy elitist attitude by so many of its fans is nauseating and simply turns me off. I get it. You're evil. Grrr.

you can say this about any genre though. theres always "those guys" that get super elitist regardless of the music type. if you listen to enough types of heavy music, those types of people will pop up haha.
Black Anvil slays. Or else I wouldnt have bought that sweet satanic T-shirt for my mom to ask awkward questions about when I drive a load of dirty laundry home.
And before you say it, theres nothing more doom than an adult male who's mother still does his laundry.

I agree. The music itself is so extreme (perhaps one might call it an "acquired taste"
) that it tends to attract people who are looking for something - consciously or subconsciously - for their own thing. Since it's "theirs", they get to decide what is "real" and what isn't.I post on a few metal-centric message boards and the black metal fans are the most obnoxious, elitist, insecure people on all of them. And they have been that way as long as black metal has been a thing.
edit: and yes - all genres have their genre police. But for some reason it just seems so much worse in black metal.

Its not so much the fact that my mom's washing my laundry, its that I despise doing my laundry SO much, I'll let it stack up for months before I drive it back home (1.5 hrs away) for her to do it... then have to explain why 3 lighters, a Jager bottle cap, and a soggy pack of rolling papers were in my pockets.
The kind of people who do their own laundry are the same types who listen to jazz and lurk around the Band Management forums p*ssing on everyone else's parade. Real men make other people do it.
