stoner/doom bassist thread part 2: suspicious smoke

This is more than likely going to be a punk band... let's see if I can get them on my page. If not, I love playing punk rock.
Might have to shelve the idea of starting a stoner metal band around here.
Never really used them myself but I recently picked up an envelope filter pretty much just for playing Sleep's Dragonaut, now I don't seem to be able to turn the thing off
I stick it on the low pass setting, turn down the Q and let the place shake
i like effects (see profile). the most important to my sound is a programable BDDI and a moogerfooger lowpass... everything else is for icing.
here is a rough demo we did in my drummers basement last fall. it sounds kind of dated now (we are tighter, have newer material, etc), but i'm still proud of it... bass should be louder in the mix, but that's how it goes.

With bands like the Melvins, Black Tusk and Black Breath out there, don't lose hope that you can't blend punk with sludge!
I have a feeling if there wasn't so much space between here and there, we would be good friends. You just named 3 bands I like that meld the style perfectly. We were going to jam tomorrow but I forgot I already had plans. It's through craigslist so I hope they don't think I am flaking out. CL around here is nototious for flakes. I should know...

and Joe, it's really about writing whatever you want to write. This genre seems to have evolved from that mindset. We play the riffs we want. Some fast, some slow, some heavy, some not, but it all works together in this wild thing we've got going on.
Take for example my band & Bird's band Billows...we don't sound anything alike(IMO) except for some similar concepts in our parts, but if we played a show together, it would work incredibly well.

Thats what I love. It's just doing what you want. Exactly why I like Canada's f'd up. I'll just have to see what these dudes are into. I listed bands such as Black Flag, Annihilation Time, Torche, HoF, and Black Cobra in my ad. Something had to have rung a bell for them to contact me.
And your explantion is right on. This music seems to be more about brotherhood, enjoying creativity, and bringing people together, something that's been missing from the punk scene for awhile. I am glad I have support from all you guys here and I know it's tough looking for a band, just excuse all my whining. Punks like to whine, right?
I love fx pedals and have a pile of them, but never use them in the band I'm in. It just never fits right. Every time I start a new heavy band where I'm the primary song writer I always end up using a couple dirt pedals and maybe a phaser here and there, but those bands never take off and the gig I'm in currently I'm always trying to serve the songs and the overall band sound first and playing really clean with tons of low end gets it done.
Even more frustrating that I don't get to use fx much, because my best friend makes custom pedals and he'll pretty much make me a clone or a mod of anything I ask for, cheap and lots of the time free.

I have had a love hate relationship with effects, mostly use varying degrees of dirt pedals. Sometimes they sound good other times not so much. It really depends on the rest of the gear. My Lakland Glaub with La Bella flats and SVT never sound good with effects, maybe just a clean boost, otherwise it's pretty classic sound that just works.
I use flats (chromes) as well. I've read about people saying that flats don't take effects as well but I haven't really experienced that. What I do run into is that my bluebeard sounds awesome, but makes everything else sound like bluebeard. Right now I have a very good mix with my bluebeard, oc-3 and digitech chorus. They have melded together very nicely.

And yeah, CL can be rough but you can totally hit pay dirt with it once in awhile. When I moved to Baltimore I didn't know anyone. I went through tons of terrible responses until I landed the perfect one which got my foot in the door with the scene and now I know a bunch of great musicians in the area. Don't lose hope!
of all the flats i have tried, chromes are them most effect friendly as they are closest to rounds. i dont thing effects are optimized for flats in general, so i usually only use them with my roundwound strung basses.
yeah, monobrow is totally an internet band too, took a few tries but eventually it worked out. none of us knew each other prior to the band.
that Cathedral can really sludge things up... I have one, but its not on my board at the moment.
So, what kind of options do you guys use for OD? I'd love to add a little dirt to my tone. Anything you guys like that keeps the bass heavy? I've been thinking of trying a SansAmp VT pedal for that.
It depends on the bass you use.. I didnt like the VT with a stingray at all.. Ive really been grooving on the SFT. It can really thump and get gritty.. I like it best with a slight bass and treble boost and the gain at like 9 oclock...just enought to get some edge.
the Dark Driving is pretty good too and Ive been using my Oxfuzz bass with the blend turned way back as a great Overdrive tone.
