stoner/doom bassist thread part 2: suspicious smoke

I find light/med overdrive is the hardest thing to nail. I have gone through many OD pedals and my favorite turned out to be the OX Fuzz Bass on mild setting. Gets a great old school tone, it has this slight mid boost to it that really sits nicely in a mix. I am actually considering getting another, so I can use one as an OD and the other as a fuzz. The reason I keep looking is that the OX Fuzz really only works at loud volumes, it just doesn't have any magic at home or in the studio, and it doesn't sound good to record straight from it, it really needs a tube amp and speakers to shine.

Other than that the only other pedal that I like is the Darkglass B3K, but I don't know if I want to spend that much money on one. I typically prefer boosters, and treble boosters to get some natural OD from my amps over OD pedals. Would love to hear what you come up with though. One can never try enough dirt pedals.

Only OD pedal I ever tried was an ODB-3. Holy **** did I hate that thing. I let my band convince me I needed distortion and ugh.

I've mentioned them here before but I don't think we ever talked about them. Anyone a fan of Black Breath? Based out of Seattle, album produced by Converge's Ballou. I saw them at 2010 MDF. 5 seconds into the start of their set and I was instantly obsessed. I love seeing a band live that I've never heard before that I end up really digging. Ive gone thru ALOT of ODs. The keepers have been the Oxfuzz (just as Bassboysam uses it!.. cant recommend that enough), the SFT (can be really nice with the Drive set at like 9 oclock),and the TAFM with the blend set loooooow, and the Fender Sublime set real low on drive as well.

Ive got a TS9B on the way, and a Phat Phuk (which Ive had before, but I just learned it had an internal trim to grit it up a little more).
Id be interested to hear your creation!

I hope to finish my prototype by Tuesday because once school starts (yes I'm the creepy old guy in class!) progress will be ultra slow.

Once it's finalized I hope to share it with you all!

have you ever tried the Ox Fuzz or Ox Fuzz II on bass? I am tempted to give them a try. I'm wondering if the Germanium versions can be used as boosters/OD.

The thing is, is that I'm not a fuzz user. I had a Black Russian Muff for a while but I gave it to my old guitar player. I just like to use old solid state heads and overdrive the inputs. My current project needs some extra power. I'm tuning lower and playing louder than I have in a while and I'm using my "big" head which is an old SWR SM400S into various big cabs and it can't get that old solid state overdrive tone. I have an ODB-3 and it is just awful. In a band mix it sounds decent but it sounds so artificial soloed that I just cringe having to use it.

yeah i'm just wondering if they completely eat the low end, and if so maybe Ken would be willing to modify it slightly for bass?? I may just email him and see..

I'm not a huge fuzz guy either. I used a Big Muff Pi for awhile and just... didn't like it.

I have a real nice Eden rig with their navigator preamp and have found that a Sansamp in front of it (with gain fairly low) gives a very nice aggressive tone. When I want to thicken it up with some OD I use a Way Huge Pork Loin (distortion way up, mix way towards clean) in front of it and that works for me. It cuts through and sounds big in the mix, but soloed it's dirty and thick as all hell.

I had the BOSS ODB-3 for about 2 jams and then I took it back and traded it in for a Tech 21 VT Bass, which I use in an on/off fashion for a grittier tone. I also have a Reutz Mod Rat that sounds good as a dirty boost, but lately I've been using it to dial in more of a Young Widows type distorted tone.

When my bluebeard got sick I was actually using my Boss OC-3 set to "drive" mode and Octave 1 dialed all the way back (so just using it for OD) and I actually really liked the sound I got out of it. However this was also running into my SVT and I've yet to do anything to make my SVT sound bad... but the OC-3 did give it some nice grit without entering the fuzz territory. I know everyone says they prefer the OC-2 over the OC-3 but I really dig my OC-3.

Well he responded in less than 5 minutes. He said that they are designed with lots of low end in mind and he thinks the Germanium Ox Fuzz would work just fine as dirty boost on bass. I will have to give it a try, now I just need to sell some pedals as the toy fund is a little low right now. The big question is do I go for the Ox Fuzz or the Ox Fuzz II? I like the smaller enclosure and chicken head knobs of the original but the external bias control on the II is intriguing as well.

btw.. Im REALLY trying to tell myself that its just "new gear love" cos otherwise Im gonna have a hard time dealing... but Im pretty damn sure I love the sound of my new passive stingray SUB MORE than my 90s ray, or the SLO (which is the only bass Ive ever ordered new!) argh.

As most know, different pedals act differently in ones rig. My best results in the beginning were like Sam with boost pedals until I found the rat tail, it is my sound, the sound in my head. It sounds close to the bass tone on Sonic Titan by Sleep listen around the 4:20 mark. Yea, go figure, 420 :) I never turn it off.

That's awesome. I'm seriously considering selling my Reutz Rat and getting a Rat Tail instead. I'd like to try undoing the Reutz mod first though to see if I like that better, since it would be WAY cheaper than upgrading and it seems like an easy mod.
