Good morning doomers. I was sick as a dog all day yesterday. I went to this burger joint called Cheeburger Cheeburger and decided to take on the 20 oz monster so I could get my picture taken. Well, my gallbladder reminded me that it has seen better days and I was riding the porcelain bus the rest of the night.

Anyway, I did some more playing with the joyo ultimate drive... I really dig it. With tone and gain at around 9 o'clock, volume at 12, and the switch set to low it cops the overdriven tube sound I wanted out of a pedal and I wasn't quite sure how to get. My wife said it sounded more like a bass when I used the ultimate drive but they both sounded good and the bluebeard had more oomph. I'll mess with them some more but overall I'm impressed by what that cheapy ocd copy is capable of.

I rode into work listening to the wizard. My old band used to cover that one before I joined. Their bass player could do the harmonica. My dad can play but I never tried to learn... might be something to do some boring weekend.

Stereo tubes...yum! I have a Mesa/Boogie Strategy 400 Stereo being delivered today. Magma is alive! All rewired, chips replaced, wires going into the boards all resoldered and a new tranny will be here in a few days. I'll have pics and a write up from the tech about all the issues that were addressed. The bad PCB excuse was BS. they were poorly built and used cheap components (10 cent op amp chips compared to 85 cent chips). I saw that you had your cabs on the sale block. Has that changed or are you going to run that 400 with something else?

Harmonic is pretty cool, we bought a half decent one for the little guy in the house to mess around and I looked online to see how they major scale is laid out on the harmonica, it is kind of weird. I can do a I-IV-V on it but that is about it until I memorize the layout better.

Think the cabs are staying now. I've been using a 400+ at practice and the Emperors are godly now. My amp pairing wasn't working before. So if the magma doesn't work out trying a meatsmoke pre, if that doesn't work I'm buying that 400+ that's sitting in our practice spot. The Strategy will stay. Tube power amps are handy to have around.

I also would not refinish, I love the look of a beat up 810. If you want to money into it, i suggest you upgrade the speakers (if they are still the original). While the old speaker sound nice, they will not get you the volume you need.

1 of the originally speakers had a noise. Besides..
I already got speakers. I found NOS leftover spares from some tour on ebay. I was able to get 8 NEW speakers for like $42 each or something after shipping. I figured since that's cheaper than a recone and since they're still in the SLM boxes.... It was kind of a no brainer. I've already got an offer for some of the old speakers... I could probably cover the costs of whole cab if I decided to sell them.

I like projects, especially woodwork. So I'm looking forward to this keeping my creative brain busy for a few weeks. I think this Cab's grain deserves to be seen in all it's dense / beastly-heavy glory. I'm going to do it a darker natural tone, maybe Mahogany-ish stain under poly urethane then add a kick plate, slide rails, and skate trucks / longboard wheels. The grill is a little more snagged than I would like, so I may not spend the time trying to clean it, and just re-stretch a new one in the blue/silver. Thankfully the grill frame is solid but I think the combo will contrast the stain well.

I dig my high powered SS amps, but there is a certain mojo with a big fvckin tube amp that cant be replaced with anything else.

the strategy's and 400+ are awesome I would love to own one, but the peavey was sooooo much more affordable - without totally blowing my Ric fund. I've found the Presence and Resonance knobs to be ideal for dialing into a band mix. Evidently they pad the highs and lows respectively. If someone could clarify on what that means I would appreciate it.... Is it kind of like the way a microthumpinator works?

Also to clarify on my previous statement regarding the DI... : Uh Cough.. Sam I don't ever want to need it, but if some ass insists on taking a signal I'm glad it's there, and I can still blast the front end of the amp independently.

I'd also like to share that I've been scrapping copper... Like Fred Sanford to save for a Ric. Allow me to elaborate. If you guys will recall a few months ago hurricane sandy left us without power for like 2 weeks due to insane flooding. You also may recall that I occasionally do electrical work for my dad. Well, needless to say we've been tearing out TONS of flooded wire... So I've been bringing it home stripping the big stuff, and squirreling it away. With every swipe of my razor knife my brain just goes... Ric. Ric. Ric. Ric....

Anybody else have any good or interesting story's about using "unconventional means" for acquiring gear?

Very interested in hearing what he says to say when everything is said and done. I remember some guy from Germany saying the PCB excuse as BS as well. The PCB excuse made sense for me, because my Magma DID leak DC voltage into the input of my PA. But that could have been caused by a number of things.

Man, I had high fret on my old Ibanez Roadstar and a lot of scored frets, this thing worked like a charm. Waiting for my fret guards to get int he mail to do my Waterstone, jsut used painter masking tape but rather have the fret guards for my baby. This made simple and fast work out of the job and the fret buzz went away and the frets were shiny.

Yeah you definitely want these, as the you can easily scratch your fretboard with the tool.

Also for fine polishing you can you the soft tip on a dremel, with toothpaste, I am going to try with car scratch remover.

Hey OldCrow, How's the ECG now that you've had it for a couple days. Seeing yours has re-ignited my GAS for one. Is yours one of the wood body or all aluminum designs (it looks like wood, but I can't tell if it was just some crazy finish or something).

I might have sent Kevin a request for a quote this weekend, I've like what I've heard from the people I've seen use them live (Torche, Yob) but I'd love to hear more in depth thoughts from other owners.

Any here have a badass bridge on their basses. I am getting a brand new one in a trade and wondering if it is worth keeping or flipping. It would fit perfect on my Ibanez Roadstar p j bass.

Yeah I was trying to land that dremel compound but none at the local stores, need to order it I guess. The ebay tool left a decent shine, but I still may go over it with the dremel and some fine polish.
