there are GHS bass boomers available for around the same price at 50-115, i like the idea of thinner high strings and thicker lows. i am slightly tainted by the idea of them though, as i used to use them in my clicky-clacky early-tool tone days with my ATK..

I've ran a cheap a$$ Morley ABY for years. It sucks some tone but never had another issue. It's hard to believe with the ground and polarity switches on the big shot you would run into any issues.

Thanks for the help! I finally made up my mind to go with the Bigshot and it`s out of stock till 3/27/13 on MF`s website. I don`t need to buy it from them,I could just buy it elsewhere online,but I have store credit with them which I`d rather use. I hate being impatient. It`s a terrible personality trait.

I think boomers die quicker then EB's, I don't think it would hurt to retry them if their available and cheapish.

god damn it. best gauge for C standard, roundwounds, on a ric 4001? rotosounds are hard to find it nz, that would be my first choice - i'll probably need to go with d'addarios.

Not on a Rick but these pulled off C no problem on a Yamaha BB300 pbass style standard 34 inch scale.

Had a great practice today. Hashed out a new song and found a great sound with the thunderbird. Chromes > Bridge pickup > Monte Allums Opto Ultra Plus Modded Boss CS-3 compressor > 50/50 blend (LS-2) of Green Russian Big Muff Pi with vol50%. Gain 10%, Tone 0% and an LM308 RAT with dist40%, Filter 85%, vol50% into an Aphex Big Bottom Bass Exciter with all controls around noon-1pm > Epiphone Valve Junior I converted into a bass amp Volume40% > DIY ported 210.

I know, you're thinking "valve junior!? What!?" But the thing sounds great when driven and is more powerful than you'd think, especially in sound treated 25x15ish room. I should hopefully have clips soon.

Practices are small club volume with isolation cans. You can still feel the bass, yet the mix sounds amazing and you're not murdering your ears. I'll always love sheer SPL, but audio engineers are hesitant to be around high SPL. Their ears are their business so I understand. (I'm spoiled, a band member runs a small but well equipped recording studio. He built his house around the studio.)

Hey Doomers.
Just got back from practice. Tonight was the first week with this drummer, it went well. I'm excited to get more comfortable with his playing style and build up some more material. Tonight was also the first night playing the peavey 120/120 in a band mix. I was really surprised and very impressed in it. I only used half of it and had more than enough volume, without being overwhelming. I think its a really good pairing for the Meatsmoke.

I also picked up / stripped down the Vintage 810
I decided to start a thread documenting the project in an attempt to avoid totally littering up this thread with photos. Feel free to follow the project.

wow! i didn't know the peavey 120/120 existed. i'm picking up two fender/sunn 215+horn PA cabs and need a "stereo" tube power amp..

I also would not refinish, I love the look of a beat up 810. If you want to money into it, i suggest you upgrade the speakers (if they are still the original). While the old speaker sound nice, they will not get you the volume you need.

Stereo tubes...yum! I have a Mesa/Boogie Strategy 400 Stereo being delivered today. Magma is alive! All rewired, chips replaced, wires going into the boards all resoldered and a new tranny will be here in a few days. I'll have pics and a write up from the tech about all the issues that were addressed. The bad PCB excuse was BS. they were poorly built and used cheap components (10 cent op amp chips compared to 85 cent chips).
