Stoner/Doom Bassists 51: Back To The Future

The discussion we're having sounds exactly what I went through before telling Sonny I wanted on the mailing list. When he finally lets you know it's ready, it's hard to say no lol. Oh, if you decide to tinker with the kits, I highly recomend the tone bypass mod. Sounds easy but I have grown to love the tone bypassed mode of my bluebeard. It just seems like it's missing something when I use the tone knob, way less midrange punch and a little less volume.

Good to know, I had no idea there were any options with Bluebeards. I have to admit I am digging my Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie. But always fun to try more flavors.

Not really an option. All the new bluebeards made from end of 2012 to present have the tone bypass switch at no extra charge. More flavors are always good, I think the next addition to my dirt collection is going to be a nice ocd clone like an osd or dunwich's awesomey goodness. The ultimate drive will hold me over for a while though.

I know I am trying to contain my GAS. Since I went through the big sell to upgrade gear recently. I got muff tones, rat tones, tubescreamer tones, the Pork Loin, the el Oso, modded ODB-3, think the only thing I am missing is the OCD tones. Of courese there are so many different flavors of those tones to A/B test lol. I can usually buy and swap gear so easily but with pedals it is hard, especially since I play guitar too. If something doesn't do so hot on bass but works great for guitar, then I get like well it does work great for guitar, maybe I should keep that...

Oh right, the tone bypass. I really should have that done to my BB just to try it out.

We really need to arrange a play date sir so you can try the tone bypass bb. Maybe when you get your shiny lightning rod of destiny?

My understanding is the tone bypass is a very simple almost trivial mod. Drill a hole, add a switch, hook up some wires and wala. Not having tone controls on the el oso and bypass on my bluebeard has done two things... 1. given me an awesome tone that doesn't require a lot of knob noodling and 2. reduced my obsessive compulsion disorder that the tone knob is set wrong. It's a wonderful thing.

I'm wondering what an OCD with tone bypass but still have usage of the high/low switch would sound like. mmmm.

When the El Oso came in and I hooked it up, I was like that is all the fiddling I have to do. Man some of those Way Huge pedals take a while to wrap your head around, with the internal trim pots, leaving the back off, flip it over, move it a little, try again, repeat. I am enjoying the Pickle Pie but I sure wish my Swollen Pickle didn't have that drop off in fast run issue, it just had such a great tone after I got done tweaking it. Yeah might be fun to pick a used OCD and due a tone bypass switch on it.

Well I can't imagine wanting to change how my BB sounds, but would like to see what difference the tone bypass makes.

It's harder to put into words than it would be to hear it roaring through your dually . I know you use the mudbutt settings. My BB has that tone at your settings but if I flick the switch, there's about 10% perceived volume increase and a hefty dose of mids added to the signal. I'd say with tone bypass off there's a very slight mid scoop and it's a nice compressed low end. With the switch on the mids are at the forefront with the bass being a tad subdued but still strong. It rocks.

I already get plenty of cut running my Ric wide open and last thing I want is a mid boost. Sounds like I'm content without it haha.

Might be. Both sounds are great. The only thing I notice is that If I do the tone bypass on the bb, then stack it with something else... there's too many mids and the signal gets squashed and too thuddy. This doesn't seem to apply to the el oso, I'm guessing due to it also being bypass and using leds instead of diodes.

In other news, I have another band tryout coming up. Going to jam with that punk band again tomorrow and make loud noises at high volumes. They have a gig in april I could play but my wife bought tickets to see a really good queen tribute band that night for her birthday and I can't say no without losing tons of brownie points :p.

Apparently I used to use a .150, I could have sworn it was .155.

Also not sure if you can just buy one string, but I used to do that.

youre the man. for 10 bucks i might just take a stab at this until i can get circle K to make me something. goddamn taper just needs to be like 1-2 inches shorter at the top and im golden!

and ron, this one was tapered right?

Honestly I really cannot remember. Probably? Sorry, it's been a long time since I used/had them.
