I play bass and build cabs for a living...wouldn't describe that as 'wicked cash to blow.'
Checked out the Catalinbread Echorec...really cool!
A few folks have mentioned the Carbon Copy...I'm endorsed by MXR, so that could be had on the cheap, and occasionally, stuff 'falls off the truck.'
Yea that moog delay is $700 while the echorec is $220. Used markets you can get it cheaper. CC is not bad 2, a bit more straightforward.
This needed to be reposted... I couldn't let Laz sell the '85 Blue Ric away to some d-bag, so I jumped on it. Got new Rotosound rounds on her and sounds way different than the flats that Laz used... the different tension required a full neck setup, the action is nice and low now and theres just some new-string zing that needs to be worn down, but it sounds awesome. Has such a nice even output for driving pedals, and that Ric gruff straight into the amp with the treb pickup solo'd.
Whats a good cleaner to keep the back of the neck clean? Yesterday I started to break a sweat in my hot attic while playing it and felt that telltale feeling of gunk stuck on a painted neck... looks like it'd be easy to clean but I dont wanna damage the paint. Guitar stores sell something that works, or anyone have any favorite neck cleaners?
Takin her out to jam tonight... been using a Rusty Box / PA head setup into the fEARful 12/6's, guitarist and drummer have been loving the clarity and tone of my Stingray copy through it... can't wait to see what this sucker sounds like turned up!!

The Moog is silly good, but I don't need a delay THAT bad
The Echorec is a strong contender. I hardly ever use or even think about delay, but I sing for a new side project I'm doing...noisy post punk crap, and there are some brief moments of 'lead' bass melody lines here and there...basically I'm doing a poor mans JJ Brunell kinda thing...grindy, but not bright
Since it's a painted/finished neck, a good standard car wax will do great to clean and protect the neck (I use Zymol). I usually try to wax my finished basses with it twice a year, but I haven't done it to that one in quite awhile.

Ibanez makes some pretty great inexpensive delays. I have a couple DE-7's which can be found for $40. I love 'em. They also have a Space Echo that has some great features and is still only a bit of $100.

While the Moog 104M is the king of delay in my books. It's definitely not for everyone.
As far as an affordable suggestion goes. I really dug/dig the Ibanez ES-2 Echo Shifter.
Analog delay with modulation, up to 1 second of delay time. Super tweakable, and has a tap tempo.
$150 new so that means you shouldn't have to pay over $130 for one.
I had one to mess around with, ended up with one of the guitarists in bongripper since between the Moog and my RE-101 I didn't really need it. But still a super cool and affordable delay pedal.

That van makes me think of a young small town prog band desperately trying to make it. This is especially important for Seth the paraplegic synth guy whose helicopter parents will never let him grow or escape his hopeless small town reality.
