Had a really good discussion about what constitues "heavy" music with my dad over the weekend. He is a blues guitarist primarily. One of the points we discussed is that heavy doesnt have to mean distortion or low tuning. He reminded me about:

Which has tons what aspects which I call "heavy".

totally agree. it's more about the mood than the amount of distortion or tempo.

It's funny, my wife and I had this guy come out last night to play with us. Dude was like 50 but we figured what the hell could jam and see what happens. He's playing all this wanna be Kenny Wayne Shepherd licks and hey whatever... what was funniest is I was using the bluebeard and with his giant line 6 hd whatever the hell multi effect he kept saying over and over "I can't play that heavy", "your distortion, it's so heavy", "I'm not really into that heavy music".

I didn't even consider what I was playing at the time to be heavy... mega fuzzed out yes but I think it made him poop a little. I did a cut and release and sent him back to craigslist with the other fishes.

haha im with you on that.

music can definitely be heavy without loads of fuzz and being down tuned, but heavy (just like loud) is a very subjective term. i will probably never think anything bluesy is really heavy, while plenty of you probably will. while i think black metal can be crushingly heavy and atmospheric, plenty of people think its lame noise.

all preference. but the heaviest song ever is "Death on Two Legs" by Queen, thats not debatable lol.

+1 to that Queen song being heavy.

My point was more - distortion and down tuning are not required criteria for a song to be heavy.

In order to find more like minded musicians, I had my wife add this line to our craigslist ad:

"Do you like Alternate tuning? Loud music? Riffs that make people crap their pants? Then this is our band!"

I will have my vision. It might take me a while but gdi it's gonna happen! The wife's going out of town starting thursday I plan on writing a whole album for her to learn when she gets back :P.
