In my town, I have never been paid for an originals project. Even well known local bands are given the "Play for the publicity" sh!t all the time. Sure some of them might make a few bucks, but not like this.

Unless you can play the whole night, or put together a line up for the whole night, you are not getting paid.

I went to a weird art show on Saturday and a neat little venue called The Shop... Laz have you heard of it? Its a dirty DIY art/music stage room, if anyone here is familiar with DIY venues you know what I mean... anyway, it occurred to me that you could get a keg or 2, charge something like $10 cover with all the beer you can drink... the first 10 people in the door would pay for the kegs, seems like a huge opportunity to actually pull some money in from a niche genre show.

Anyone ever do beer "donations" to raise funds?

If it's legal (within a venue) I like the idea. If it's not a legit venue I say do whatever brings them in.

never? i mean i know originals are nowhere near as lucrative as a cover band, but never is a stretch. id like to think everyones been part of some successful local shows that were a blast where everyone got paid a little bit.

Usually those shows are some touring act as the head liner, who gets paid, and local original openers.

Very rare for the headliners to pay out the local guys.

Was it someone on here that posted how Hydra Head has a bandcamp page up now? Listening to Harkonen's Grizz right now. Don't have the CD anymore, got stolen with an old CD binder years ago, but I remember buying it originally just because of the name.

We usually pull some small bit of cash at the end of a show. $60 for the band seems to be about average, but if there's a touring act we'll usually just give them our cut, when it's that small who cares? The guys in the van usually need that 20 bucks more than I do.

That being said, we've played a couple of shows that were so poorly attended that we made nothing, and had one show with 3 local bands plus Vega where we got paid pretty decently. We're trying to set up a show at a local dive that never charges a cover and from what I hear always manages to pay bands fairly well... so it really depends on a lot of different factors. I never expect to walk out of a show earning anything, so when I do it's a nice bonus.

No cover at our show. We had a decent crowd, but it wasnt packed. Still ended up with more cash than I though, even after the split. I made more in cash at the gig, than I do at a day of work.

Just went and read it, because I had to lol. Personal pet peeve, if you don't like something someone else does you "don't get it". As if to say, there's no such thing as difference of opinion and taste...what I like is objectively good and if you don't like it, it just went over your head. My wife goes crazy with that kind of thing, especially when family members do it with spiritual stuff. Which they do, frequently.
