According to my guitar player(huge sleep fan. Actually owns one of the green amps used for recording dopesmoker.) Holy mountain was there demo that they sent to relapse(?). Relapse apparently liked it so much, they released it as is.

As for my opinion on production value. Although my love of sludge (crowbar, eyehategod, 1st soilent green, acid bath) stems from a child who grew in southern Louisiana and has lasted just as long. My second love has always been grotesque poor quality black metal. I have a distinct appreciation of poor quality metal. I've always felt it conveyed a certain foreboding character.

Sounds like we have nearly the same taste in music.

All the sleep are good but IMO Holy Mountain is the best.

My first Soylent Green album was Sewn Mouth Secrets. Still like it the best.

+1, still my favorite from them. I grew up listening to acid bath, crowbar, tungsten, down, eyehategod, corrosion of conformity. Saw crowbar 6 or 7 times in the late 90s - early 00s and down on the first tour.

Crowbar was so heavy live, their feedback would vibrate your entire body. One show i went to with a bad upper respiratory infection that was hanging around for weeks, the vibration from crowbar loosened everything up and i was hacking up nasty lung butter during their set. Next day i felt 100% better.

Love me some basement quality DOOM, with all the raw room noise and barely hearing beat to death drums, harsh feedback. If a band sounds great and makes me love them with shvtty recordings thats harder to do than with amazing production.

Glad you liked Sun Blood Stories. They are a local band that has a pretty cool sound.

I feel the same way. Holy Mountain was the first album I heard from them and it's still my favorite. I never got that into Jerusalem/Dopsmoker. A lot of people hold that up as their artistic pinnacle, which is a valid opinion, I just don't share it personally. I appreciate the riffs and hooks over the celebration of how long the song can be. Not to say that's the only thing Dopesmoker has to offer, but I do appreciate the sort of "narrative beats" of a good song structure and album structure a lot more.

Maybe this is my problem with Sleep.

I didn't much care for it; might have to check out Holy Mountain.

I really don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I've heard professionally recorded albums that sound a lot worse.

I find that just turning it up helps overcome the shortcomings in the recording.
