New bass day! - just got one of these:

Not the best thing ever, but it was in my price range (which is CHEAP). It's downstairs getting a setup, then I'm taking straight from work to practice. This friday is shaping up nicely.

I don't do it much anymore, but when I was a teenager I spent a lot of time playing along to albums and bringing songs I liked into my bass lessons so I could learn them.

Newer, simpler stuff I can just listen to and figure it out, like weedeater, sour vein etc...

That's too bad, hope it works out. Witch Mountain is going to be here on Sunday. I'll have to go and say hi to Rob and Nate, an old band I was in opened for the original incarnation of Witch Mountain a couple of times. Hard to believe that was 10 years ago.

As for playing songs, I also spend more and more time just riffing around, but from time to time I will put on a classic record and play it from start to finish (or at least listen to it and drop in when I know what to play). Usually it's black sabbath or paranoid :D

I also find immensely satisfying to play along to dopesmoker when I have a whole evening free. Of course I can't play it note for note, but it is usually easy to follow it.

I'm with ya, I may try to figure out or learn a specific line if it catches my interest: National Acrobat for example... But I generally learn it and forget it... There are few covers that stick with me if I don't play them regularly.

Yea I learned a few with lessons, and a guitarist who liked covers. Other than that I don't really get into covers. For one what ever I feel like learning is always in a tuning the bass I'm holding isn't, and I have a ear that really needs training.

Also for sone reason I can see a tab and listen to a song and cannot make it work. But if you show me even on guitar what your doing once and then played it I'd follow along fine.

On that note I thought sleep tuned to c not b? And is nirvana E, Eb, drop D or D standard, so much missinformation and all the tabs sound off so in trying figure them out forjamming with the girls.

Yeah I have a few "go to" songs for when I'm trying out a new bass or noodling around in GC (typically Clutch's Swollen Goat, Diamond Head's Prince, Kyuss's Green Machine, Black Sabbath's Electric Funeral, etc) but if I'm just jamming out I'd rather come up with my own stuff. I certainly don't deny the enjoyment of doing something like playing along to a Sabbath album though!

My biggest thing too. I know a bunch of songs, as I mostly play by ear. But after not playing them for awhile, don't ask me to play much more than Journey to the End of Eastbay, Bro Hymm, Lamar Vinoy, or Speculative Fiction (The new Propagandhi is so good to those of you into punk/metal or a combination of both. They are way more progressive now and there are a few tracks with some doomy elements.)

If it's C, I still fret the correct notes when tuned to B. So, that's the only time I try to play it. I'm not tuned low enough to play it on the regular. (drop D)
