Stoner/DOOM Bassists thread part 37: Ancient Alien Fuzz

@ Toastfuzz

I am running a very non vintage 9.2, so it is nice to be able to start with a very solid clean tone and start shaping from there. I have the VT as well, and while I dig it, sometimes it's the loudest kid at the party and when mixed with anything else, seems to be the dominant tone shaper.

I have been reluctant to jump on the RB because of the different power requirements. I just ned to get over it and try it out. Do you run you RB high gain or low?

I dont use the pad switch, its a tone sucker, but my volume is usually around the 9:00 mark or a pinch higher (when going into an amp's front end.) I run it fairly low-medium gain, enough Gain for a burly 70's type "clean" overdrive (smooth but driven Geezer-type tone.) It does the touch sensitive thing, more dig = more dirt, very well. I don't really use the Boost function, don't think many do.

I always rock a surge-protected power strip, 100% all the time no matter what. It has enough plugs for a 1Spot, my wah, the RB plug, and my amp. I've been to too many gigs or jams where you're given 1 outlet and thats it, tough sh*t if you need more.

Not sure :hmm:, I think it had something to do with embarking on a complex and unfamiliar electronics project (I'd never done a pedal before ) while under the influence :rollno:. The first goof I installed the LED backwards and powered it on, not realizing an LED has a + and -. Aen told me I probably fried the chip by doing that :crying:, and he sent me a new LED and chip. I installed the new LED and chip in (what I thought was) the correct formation :D but apparently it was still not all that correct :help:, or maybe I'd made another mistake the first time around :eyebrow:. Having no idea what was fried and what was not , and as my GAS for The Great Destroyer :bassist: turned to rage-infused  frustration, I threw the whole tangled mess under my desk and haven't given it a thought since. :smug:

hahaha So I take it the instruction arent very good then?
Looks like a simple build with such a small board. I think I might pick up the kit after I finish with modding my BF-2B.

Dunwich, (or any other electronics wizards out there) I have a question, if you'd be so kind to lend your wizardly wisdom. I built a Zvex SHO clone. Works great, but the pot only works right backwards. This seems completely illogical to me, which way it's wired shouldn't make any difference right?

The pot is wired like a simple variable resistor. In on the middle leg, out on an outer leg. However, if I wire it so turning it clockwise "turns it up" I get almost no change in the effect until almost 70% of the rotation also get and some weird cut-out. (not like "crackle ok" crackle) If I wire it in reverse (counter-clockwise "turns it up") I get a nice linear (well, it's audio taper, but you get the gist) increase.

Bad pot right? Audio taper should be the same either direction no?

the pot on that SHO should be a 5k linear pot. Log pots dont have the same sweep in both directions since its log tapering. Thats your whole problem.

Stolen from miss-posts in the last thread:

I find that friendliness spooky. I'm all "what's their angle?"
Seriously! I think that's more of a Northeast thing.

n00b here. Would it be too much to as for the people of this fine thread to post their band links? I'd like to check them out. Thanks.

The ideal taper for a SHO would be reverse audio, which is denoted with a C (5kC). Thats why the pot works so well when it is wired in reverse. Mr. Vex just used a lin pot in his early SHO because they were easier to get hold of and back in the day reverse audio taper pots were not readily available.

@jerreymcdougal: audio pots do not behave the same in either direction. google up some pot-tper graphs and you'll see why.

thanks for some insight. I should have remembered reverse log is more ideal for that kind of control. I am just not used to ever considering that since their are not any reverse log pots for amps (least not in the stuff I would use.)
