Stoner/DOOM Bassists thread part 37: Ancient Alien Fuzz

you could make a volume (using a knob not a rocker) pedal with a buffer that's designed to take switch the impedance from active to that of a passive, along with a volume control to lower the volume down to that of a passive. That way you get to keep your tone controls on your bass, but it interacts with pedals and your amp like a passive.

know how to do this? or where to get one?

Just thinking about the whole ray passive/active thing. Dunwich was talking about doing something to the bass that modifies the attenuation on the bass to make it similar to a passive. Don't some pedals have the active/passive switch that does the same thing? And if so... couldn't they just make a pedal that does just that and nothing else so actives can use whatever fuzz they want? Just a thought.. I could be totally wrong or whatever.

Oh is that what he means? Lol I put a resistor on one of my bongos awhile back so it didn't drive my amp pre amps too hard ( I was more of a clean tone guy at the time). I put it right after the pre in front of the output jack. I imagine you could maybe get the same effect with a boost ped but running it as a cut not a boost. ???

Googled a bit... what about something like this? Not a simple switch but it might work for the job?

I could wire the volume part, but the buffer is beyond my abilities, maybe Nick can chime in on this.

Oh man. Please don't mention churches and tax exemption. Mr Personality won't be able to restrain himself.

I'll try not too ;) It bugs me as well.....

:D

We should have a church. I am tired of paying taxes too.

Preach it Rev. Laz!

The Church of the Stoned Jesus. I'm in, I nominate myself for youth pastor..... wait that sounds kinda creepy.... meh who cares :D

It's funny on another forum were talking about starting Doom University, an actual trade school that will teach you in the ways of Doom, but not be afraid to let you know when you fail and how to improve. Starting a church would help escalate us to cult status, lets do this. :bassist:

what I would do is have a volume pot, something like 1M into a buffer which had a series resistor to emulate the output impedance of a passive pickup Viola done. Of course its not a perfect emulation since pickups are inductive and resistive not just resistive sources

so if you ran a stingray into that, I could turn it down some and get a "passive" effect for the bass? what would it do different from just turning the volume knob down on my active bass if I was just using if for a passive interplay with the amp.

im a bit clueless as to the effects of impedances on input signals.

your pots are probably designed to be low impedance so they wouldnt offer much output impedance change by decreasing volume a little bit

I just think it's hilarious, not only when someone who claims to be a certain way backs out on all their convictions when doing business. (I remember watching one of those repo shows where a pastor's wife was cussing out the dude and then gave him a striaght right hand. Dude went straight to the ground. LOL.) But then also tries to be included in everything, even the things that are against those beliefs.

Ex. Black Metal. Anyone here like White Metal? Anyone here wonder why there is even a genre for it? me too doomers, me too.

As long as your current product line features wizard images and what not, I am hoping that situation never comes up for you. But if it does, hey, it's a paycheck as far as I am concerned. Make your money, homey.

When Trouble's Run to the Light album came out Metal Blade records slapped a sticker on the front calling it "white metal". They had some semi-christian/spritual themes and got wrongly tagged as christian metal. They were not happy about it. Whoops.

Imagine the volume control as a water hose, turning it down decreases the hose diameter. The impedance is the water pressure, your active has very high water pressure, while a passive has very low. The pedal would take your large diameter hose (which is too big for some pedals) and decrease its size to a manageable level, and then take your high water pressure and also turn it down as well (so that your active bass plays with fuzz pedals like a passive bass). A regular volume pedal would just decrease the hose size, which would not really effect how the bass and pedals interact. This is theoretical though.

here is a basic scheme. So the output impedance and response are dictated by the impedance pot, the treble cap is there to balance out the high end loading you would get to more accurately model a passive pickup. Could be changed to do different JFET biasing but that should work.
