Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I had myself all psyched up to go to a meeting this morning. A customer called me on Saturday night and asked if I could go to it last minute, as an "expert witness" of sorts to this review board. I have to get myself pumped up to do stuff like that, because it make me anxious. Then I find out the meeting is rescheduled. So I'm all amped up, in a very extroverted headspace and I have to sit at my desk and do paperwork all morning.

it's white outside and 25. Under 5 blankets so I didn't have to use my heater. cabin fever will be setting in soon. I'd walk to my friends place, but the girl he's dating rushed over before the freeze and is conviniently trapped there.

I met her Saturday and all I can say is I'm good on never meeting her again. Manic alcoholic Gollum looking creature. He really needs to try harder, and go for quality over quantity.

Hey guys I've been searching threads for an hour that led me to this page and I'm hoping you can lend a hand.

I'm looking for a pedal to get a Sludge Metal/Speed Rock like bass tone ala Kvelertak, Baroness, Red Fang. Get the idea?

I've tried a few pedals and can't seems find the sound I'm looking for. So far the Heavy Electronics El Oso is on the top of the list. What else can you guys suggest?

Anyone Checkout the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh?

Any help is always appreciated.

For now I'm running:

Fender Jazz - Basslines 1/4# (Bridge) & Vintage Hot (Neck)
Orange Bass Terror (500)
2 Ampeg SVT210AV Cabs (This might get upgraded to a 610 or 810)
Boss TU-3 & Boss CS-3 (These are going to get upgraded soon to pedals that don't color the sound. I was in a pinch at the time.)

Well, Aaron from red fang used A beta bass and a catalinbread SFT pedal last time i saw them...

The EL Oso is a great start to getting in that ball park. Fuzzrocious demon too. Im in love with the Fuzzrocious darkest driving. Huge sounds. Plus the boost being usable when the pedal is bypassed lets you have two drive stages on every pedal on your board.

Really, any all-tube amp for under $200 is a good deal. If that was a 60W Sunn head like a Sentura or Sorado it'd go for $700 plus.

^^^ exactly

I'm sold. Pitching a ***** over $25 bones seems silly, but I feel like a deal making failure when I can't talk a CL deal down some. But you guys are right. Sub-$200 for an all tube head is a good deal. @ampegfuzz I may take your advice to keep the tolex as is. I kind of want to tolex it in white though and maybe strip and stain the front wood plate with a dark stain or a veneer of some kind. I am not that concerned about how it would effect value as the non-original knobs and Frigidaire name plate kind of throw that off. Although the Frigidaire plate is kind of cool.

I could probably do that. I have access to a sweet woodshop via my step grandparents. Step grandpa doesn't really know much about woodwork though and I do not know a thing about joinery. It would probably cost more though in sweat equity and money than I may be motivated to invest in an already cheap amp. We'll have to see if it even works out. Y'all are familiar with CL skeevery.

As it stands, I am waiting on the big brown truck for a T40 NBD. SO thats pretty exciting. Hopefully he/she doesn't just skip my house because they don't want to go out in the cold.

In my experience, El Oso > BDPG is a great combination.

34" neck bullet bass is on the way or at least on the fed ex truck, pretty rainy last night, took me 3.5 hours to drive from the desert back to LA and i was super drowsy/semi dehydrated, talked to lady lazarus the singer songwriter and she suggested trying to play the experimental noise fest they have in the desert every year

For once I think Im pretty much GAS free, my VEGA rig is pretty much perfected and PVYHenge is complete. Just need Janitors footswitch extention but besides that unless some rare unicorn tuxedo peaveys pop up I dont really need anything. Although my Hondo ric is becoming a real POS, but I plan on using my first full time paycheck for a real ric. I dont consider that GAS, cause itll definitely be more of a need than a want by that time.

Actually thats a lie, the second the Dunwich DA120OD preorder comes up, Im buying one.

Saw this the other day. I am thinking about picking it up as a low wattage tube amp and also practice for learning how to tolex. I, however, am only really interested if I can get it for $150 bucks or less. I messaged the guy and it is fully operational with a 3 prong already on it. Haven't heard a whole lot about these amps, but what I have heard is that they actually have a really nice tone to them, and I have had my eyes peeled for low wattage tube options for sometime.

I acquired one the same heads on ebay several years ago when I was first starting to tinker with tube heads. I don't remember exactly what I paid for it, it wasn't very much but it was still too much as it was pretty well trashed beyond what the description said when I got it. It had originally been the bright light blue color but had been spray-painted black. Also the diode voltage doubler power supply putting 660V on the 6L6 plates kind of freaked me out so instead of fixing it, I gutted it and turned it into a sort of Plexi-like Traynor YBA-1A clone running 6550's. The tolex was trashed so I got some bright red "garnet" tolex and it remains to this day my one and only tolex job. It actually turned out pretty good.

In retrospect, the 660V is probably not that big a deal for a good quality 6L6 since the tube screens are held at half that, 330V. So I say go for it!!

Don't do that you'll suck all the cool out of it ;). If you swap those knobs I will gladly take them :)
