Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I refuse to work anywhere that piss tests employees. I once interviewed for a good paying job. I was totally clean at the time. It went really well and about 45 minutes into the interview our conversation goes like this:

HR person- "Well I just have one more question for you. What time tomorrow or Wednesday could you be available to supply us with a urine sample?"
Me- "Im sorry. I dont think I can do that."
HR person- (looks at me puzzled for half a minute) "You do realize I am offering you the position and this is a final formality to check off the list, dont you?"
Me- "Yeah, its just that I only share body fluids with someone Im REALLY close to, and well... we just met.... Sorry."
HR- "I Dont understand."
Me- "Well, I guess Im saying that if invasion of my free time and my bodily intimacy is part of the job then I dont wanna work here. You should know, that I know my test would come back clean and this is costing your company the one person they actually wanted for the position if its a requirement."
HR- "Unfortunately, it is."
Me- "Unfortunately, I will have to keep looking. Have a good day."

I was about the 25th person they interviewed and they couldnt find anyone suitable. I was the first person they offered a job to, and I walked.

not really.
The whole story is that about 4 questions into the interview I REALLY started to question whether I wanted to work there because of the types of questions they were asking... So in my head I kinda said "shag it" and answered everything TOTALLY honestly and candidly cos I wasnt committed to the idea of working there and figured Id have fun and if it "blew" the interview then oh well.. Funny thing is, it made the interviewer really warm up to me. Then, right before the above conversation she left the room for a few and returned with that question. I knew I had the job if I wanted it. So i figured it really was a "stand firm" moment. I had a better job two days later. (at least for me and my sanity).

If times were HARD.. Id consider it out of necessity... but theyve never been THAT hard.
I would be fine if it was a place like where my dad worked that ONLY tested you if there was an accident. I understand that from a liability point of view, but just as a "get in the door".. sorry.

Never worked anywhere that required a piss test. Probably because I've only ever worked jobs that involved making things, doing physical labor or something closely related. Which by the rationale employers provide for drug testing would be more important, because it would be more "dangerous", but in those jobs they care more about you getting your work done and knowing what you're doing than what you do in your off hours. I don't buy the reasoning or even understand the purpose of it in office settings. Other than just establishing dominance and keeping people instilled with a low level of fear at all times. Keep in mind I'm clean and sober and have zero interest in mind altering substances, besides fuzz pedals.

That's strange Corey cause all I've done is labor and they all test.
My first" real " job only tested when you were hired and if you got hurt.
Otherwise they wouldn't have had employees and they knew it. It was the minimum required by their workers comp insurance.
Ever since then it's been regular tests at just about every job. (This one follows DOT standards for whatever that's worth.) It's a real pain even though I don't want to stay high 24/7 I also don't want to be paranoid about it.
Its been hard for me to meet musicians who don't smoke and want to play heavy music. Maybe they're "OK" that I disappear while they spark up but it's always weird and I don't get a call after that.
Might be different here in WA than it was in LA where folks still get prosecuted.
