Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Did some recording with the boys last night. Got two songs completely done except for drums. Those will be a pain. Any tips for drum recording? We're gonna have to sum some of the drum mics together since we don't have enough inputs to record each mic separately.

Might have to let you gents listen to some of this stuff when it's done. It's not exactly doom, but it's heavy. So far one's more of a thrash vibe, the other kinda doomy, but not full on doom if that makes sense.

Those things should be capable of insane lows. You might just consider grabbing a poweramp w/ a built-in crossover. Run your mace into the two 10"s for your mids and highs and plug its line out into the poweramp and then use it to pump the lows into your 18"s. Really( depending on cabinet porting)
you could have fearful-class lows.
No way your guitarist could compete, regardless of his amp.

Probably still have mud in the mix though it would send a message.

Except my 218+210 isnt an actual 3620, its a Sonic brand custom one off. Its far inferior than a 3620 because of the internal volume. Its the size of an 810, and the chamber for the 10s is no bigger than a shoebox. The ports are just holes in the baffles. It sounded okay but wasnt great by any means. The brand new PVY lowrider 18s and JBL 10s that came with it are easily worth double what i paid for the whole thing...as of right now it just sits because the crossover is broke. One of the lowrider 18s lives in my folded 18, where it brings the uber lows in PVYHenge. Ive been thinking about taking the other 18 and 10s out and selling the cab unloaded. Keep the 18 for back up and make a sealed 210 for the JBLs for recording purposes, so I dont have to lug an 810 into a studio for that sound.

I will state up front that they are not designed as bass pedals, even the VT has been tuned more as a guitar version then a bass version like the original.

I'll still do bass demos for each, unless they're just completely unusable. I doubt that will be the case though. They might be less than ideal for bass, but plenty of people use pedals designed specifically for guitar to great effect on bass.

For me, i always like to place a mic or two elsewhere in the room to pick up a little ambient drum echo. Jimmy Page was, IMO, an ace producer and had a magic way with drums in particular.

Ive had good results pointing mics up in corners behind the drums like at the space right behind the drummer's head, but you'd have to work with placement in different rooms.

Basically natural reverb, but of course sometimes you want things more dry.

This suggestion is probably about as useful as a football bat.

Peavey Fury. $100. I put an EMG GZR in mine and love the sh*t out of it.

Just keep an eye out. There are tons of Pbass copies out there, many of them are very decent players. I'd look for an MIJ P, for your budget. But if it's a, I just want to try it, go to GC. See what's what with them. Make sure you like spacing. It is different than a Jazz and some folks have a hard time adjusting.

Yeah, those Furys are real sleepers. Really quality P-type basses. Not exactly clones in the looks department, but close.

If you can find an older Ibanez Blazer or Roadstar with a split-coil pickup, those are also great basses and can still be had for reasonable $$$.

Probably the best suggestion.
There are million USA peavey waiting to be snatched up. If you don't like the tone the EMG GZR is by far the easiest switch. All plug-in connectors. I'd let my 4 year old handle it.
Also a good pickup suggestion over Dimarzios(which I love) is not supposed to be very hot.

Also how do you like your blue Heeler/how was raising it if you did from puppyhood?
