Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

How do they do restrictions? I assume its backwards and really it's more what's allowed that's programmed in?

Tulsa spelled backwards is a slut. Learned something new today. Double bag it when you visit.

Also apparently Texas is one of 6 states to prohibit open carry. a texas tradition since the state began I think, surprising as that may seem. Well it's just become legal to pack heat openly.

Maybe something more fun will become legal soon.

I read that and I thought open carry meant booze at first. I was thinking of Tennessee Coolers /Bum Bags I guess.

I can do that in denton

I guess once this bill passes I'll have to decide between carrying beer and a shotgun, Or a flagon of rum and a flintlock.

Accessorizing!

Being one of the only, if not the only person here to see vega live? Whats your take? Is my bass bassy enough? Is his sound dominating bass wise? This all in from in our practice space, in which the space itself could be the problem...

Well, from what I've seen of your space (in photos) it looks like a giant concrete room with high ceiling, so both of your rigs are throwing out tons of bass that's bouncing all over the room and muddying things up. I would definitely expect your overall band sound in that space to be very muddy with all of the reflections going on. It has nothing to do with fuzz or dirt.

I think I've seen Vega half a dozen times, in a few different spaces. I do think that your guitar player is crowding your sonic space - his dual (triple?) amp rig is very loud and he's pushing a lot of bass and low mids while cutting highs. It's not like I can't hear you, but you're being overpowered and crowded into a very narrow space at the sub-low end.

If he could swap out his bass amp for another guitar amp he could still have his multi-amp rig, even eq one to be low and the other to be high or whatever he wants - but he'd be largely out of your sonic space.

If he's dead set against changing his side of things here's what I'd do. Try a really mid-forward OD like an OCD clone or a Rat into your Mace > 810 rig - do the sub low thing with some 18s - but add an aggressive/grindy, overdriven mid-forward signal. You'd get yourself heard over the low end and he could still have all the muddy low end that he wants. He's not using the upper-mid to high end of the spectrum, so I'd keep one foot in the sub-low end and put the other into high-mid grind territory.

Other advice that's not at all practical - 300W tube head. I shaging DOMINATED the mix on Monday night - that's with a LOUD drummer and two guitar players w/ 50W tube heads. Low end and grindy mid-focused OD - it was loud, low and sat perfectly in the mix. I could have drowned everyone out fairly easily... anyway - that's kind of poopy advice.

Thanks for the input on the amp situation, men.

Somehow missed that tuck & roll Kustom.

Way, way back I borrowed a rig from a friend's younger brother--it was two Kustom cabs in glitter blue tuck and roll and a matching Kustom head, all from the 70s.

He was gonna sell me the whole shebang for like $200 (this was around 1986)...he was letting me keep it set up where my band at the time practiced.

The day I showed up with his $200, the entire rig was gone. He traded it to some Hessian for an ounce of weed. At the time I could score an oz of decent stuff for about $75. That episode still kinda hurts.

Anyways, will work on piecing together something. Still considering selling my MIM P bass to fund this...

I will keep y'all posted if I score something, and may have more annoying questions between now and then.

Thanks for the outsider opinion Janitor...the space is definitely making it way worse than it seems I believe, but i think there still is a sonic problem. I dont think he needs to go as far as change to a guitar head, he just needs to dial back the bass on his bass amp, which he dimes.

Good news is while were playing in Indy this weekend theyre doing some soundproofing work on the ceiling. So maybe that will make it better.

Next amp I buy is gonna be a Bear amps SS vulcanish pre and 300 watt tube power section. Thatll put out the lows for sure.

It started coming extremely fast too. Dizzy and tunnel vision out of nowhere.

I bet the air pressure was flip-flopping in your neck of the woods. Almost every afternoon I get the aura creeping in, which luckily is the end of the work day at least. I usually try to do my hardest most concentration required work in the mornings and the easier stuff in the afternoons during my most derp moments of the day. I sounded like I was a stutterer when I was helping my co-worker troubleshoot an issue on Monday. I knew what I wanted to say but couldn't make it come out. You need to derpa derpy derpaddy do this and then derpadittydo this and that should fix it...

re: the migraines...I know it's hard to find anything to touch them. Do you find any relief from anything? Lortabs or other Rx pain meds? Booze? Smoke?

My dad started suffering migraines only 10-15 years back. They don't know why chronic migraines started so late in his life. His blood pressure has gone up a bit over the years, but that's all they can figure.

He is 80 this year. He started smoking weed when he was 67 after an actual doctor recommended he try it for the headpain.

It's the only thing that works for him. But I've known other people who won't touch weed for migraines, saying it makes their temples feel like they are going to explode...

Green doesn't shake them for me,(well maybe takes some of the stress and takes them away from thought a bit) painkillers barely unless I take a good bit of them and when they wear off it is still there. 3 to 4 Excedrin migraine works if I catch it in time and the actual abortive triptans work even better if also taken in time That is all for the eyestabbers though. The daily chronic headaches, though not as bad as eyestabbers, they seem to just hang through it all. None of the preventative meds have worked that I have tried yet, anti-seizure meds, anti-depressants, blood pressure pills, etc. I sure wish green worked. Allergy shots, sinus surgery(twice), special diets, yadda yadda, nope, nothing yet. 12 years now but they originally were only one eyestabber a week to two weeks, now 2 to 3 eyestabbers a week. Only break was when I first moved to Virginia, it was a drought year and I moved in late summer, no problems till late fall then they came back.

Damn. Maybe you should seriously look into moving to someplace in the arid West. Lots of parts of West Texas, AZ, NM, Nevada...we've talked about all this I know.

My only concern with a westward move is making sure there will still be water available there a decade or two down the road, wherever "The Place" happens to be...

But the lack of humidity...maybe that will help you.

It ain't the same thing, but back right after WW2, my wife's grandfather contracted tuberculosis (he was in Oklahoma) and was hospitalized and told he would never leave the hospital alive. They gave him less than 6 months.

He checked himself out and moved to somewhere in Arizona and stayed the better part of two years. Completely cleared him up. He moved back to Oklahoma and lived another 60 years.

I've had my share of knocks, injuries, illnesses, etc., but I just cannot imagine trying to live or just get through a day with that kind of migraine pain always haunting you. I feel terrible for you guys. Like I say, I've had blinding migraines (very periodically) and all I could think was not "Ooh...I hope this passes soon.." but "How the fvck am I gonna hold on and make it through the next 5 minutes of this?!?!?!"

I used to get migraines pretty regularly. someone mentioned that artificial sweeteners can cause them. I stopped drinking "diet" drinks and no migraines since. if you consume anything like that you should try cutting them out.

the only liquids I drink now are water, milk and beer (usually stouts). no sodas, juices and very little hard liquor.

I get the occasional migraine - what works for me is as soon as I start to notice the aura symptoms (I always get blind spots and/or flashing lights in my eyes) I take 4-5 ibuprofen and chug a beer. That will knock it back to a somewhat tolerable level. Of course if I'm at work or something I have to skip the beer - unfortunately the beer seems to be the key ingredient in the formula.
