Besides I've only got a couple more years to make joks like this, my little girl is almost 4.

So was my ol' lady but I saw Faith No More(Patton) on tour with Helmet in 1989/90/91ish in Wilkes-Barre.

I missed that tour because I had a cross country meet that night. I suck at running. And setting priorities apparently.

Apparently it was a pretty legendary night. My buddy missed FNM, having gotten kicked out for stage diving during Helmet. But at least he got to meet Helmet members in the parking lot. A group of cheerleaders from my high school joined FNM onstage for "Be Aggressive" in full Davenport Central Blue Devils gear. Dammit *** was I thinking?

I suck because I'm poor as hell, even though I work hard. But I've decided when I have the scratch scared up, my next several music purchases will be from people right here who release CDs...I got a lot of catching up to do.

It was a great show, in my top ten list of best live shows. Both bands were great and sounded great in that venue. There were chairs because it was an old theater so that kind of sucked but in reality it was better because you actually hear the bands.

Aw hell, I consider you all friends. Nobody here creeps me out. Jokes are jokes and all in good fun. I expect any of you men would step up to protect my kids if some kind of proverbial chit was going down, and I'd do the same for you and yours. My daughters would be cracking up at this. They really are cool human beings.

Man, 4 is a cute time, right? I miss mine being that age, but it sure was nice when they got a little older, stopped fighting with each other as much and became more independent. (My girls are one year & nineteen days apart in age, so my wife and I went without a LOT of important sleep for a few years there...)

Looking to try out a P Bass as I've never had one in my arsenal. Any good recommendations for a "starter" around $500? My 2x hb's in my Fender Blacktop seem a bit too hot for my style of pick-playing. Figured if I'm going to try out a new bass I should check out the P's.

The MIM Fenders are around that new, used you can find one for around $300 in good shape pretty easy. Some of the Squier stuff gets good reviews. Either way play some and pick the one that feels good, because there is some spotty QC with both. A pickup swap would probably be in order. I also prefer Dimarzio Model P.

HEY! I have an actual pedal question!

Years back I used to have an old Hondo 8 string bass...doubled courses like a 12 string guitar. I didn't use it much, but I think it's an underused instrument.

The only ones I see available currently are the Hagstroms for about $500.

I don't want (and CAN'T even if I did want to) shell out $500 for an 8 string bass that would only get occasional use.

However, as I might be starting out jamming with just a drummer (for now...) and just in the interest of having an approximation of an 8 string sound at hand, are there any pedals that come anywhere close to doing this?

Octaves and Pitch Shifters, sure, but anything specific anyone might have tried? Specific brands of these effects?

I understand the POGs are capable of something in the ballpark but they cost almost as much as the Hagstroms basses.

Those mini POGs seem to be pretty decent for an octave up that tracks well. If you really want an 8 string, there are others out there that can go pretty cheap used. They're just mostly out of production, but not rare. Dean has the Rhapsody, I owned one previously and it was cool, and the Edge series 8 strings. There were also some cheapy import brands like Carlo Robelli and a bunch of others that are the same bass with different logos that pop up here and there. 8 strings are cool, but kind of a PITA for maintenance. That's why I got rid of mine, besides the fact I could never find a use for it consistently.

Behringer US600 Ultrashifter $50 or so if you don't mind digital.

Probably Octavio Fuzz clones for cheap on Reverb and I Love Fuzz(ILF). I really dug that MXR Slash Octave Fuzz on bass, pretty sure that was Octavio-ish. That was pricey though, but a Fuzz with octave would do it. I love analog octave up with dirt on bass!

3 and 4 is a fun age. Micah is 7 now and already huff'n and puff'n and slamming doors when upset. But turning into an awesome comedian already too.

8 strings are cool, but kind of a PITA for maintenance. That's why I got rid of mine, besides the fact I could never find a use for it consistently.

Aside from cost, this is another main reason I don't really want to shell out for an actual 8 string bass. Keeping 2 or 3 regular 4-bangers strung, tuned and maintained is more than enough already without adding an 8 string to the fold for what I expect would be very occasional use.

I've owned 12 string guitars before where the tension eventually just goated the neck all to heckfire.

Some cheaper then fifty on ebay. I want another analog but the pitch fork is pretty nice and the ol' lady got it for me so it has to stay, funny I really only like octave up on bass and down on guitar.

The MIM Fenders would be my suggestion as well. Pickup swap and an upgraded bridge did wonders for my P. I like the SPB-2 cause it's got a nice mid range for picking and its punchy. I threw a Babicz on mine. Great bridge.
