Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

This gear purgers ready started, but today is starting in full force. Fixing all guitars tonight. Listing everything today from extra pickups and parts and straps to fully built gear. My bed is flipped on its side and the room is getting cleared out then every item gets put in there. So I'll just have a sales room and my living room.

Then in like a week or so I'll go to Austin and grab the stuff I have there and bring it back here for sale.

Friends gonna translate my sublease and roommate ads into Spanish and post them to his multitude of foreign national student friends.

About time to go to put down on the house, cash some checks and eat a torta then get back to the purge.

Not got much to show for the weekend. May have found an amp I will put in layaway...still looking/debating.

Also, still schooling my older daughter (at her fervent request) on cool music. She really likes old, obscure heavy music, punk rock, etc. Always interested in getting turned on to things she hasn't heard before.

Well, the desire to play hasn't waned at all. But I just wasn't home, so I couldn't! And everything's "ok" as much as it can be, given the situation. It's all together, it was just really inconvenient.

I kind of miss having a jazz bass and a Gibson style guitar. I sold my SG to a friend, I traded my LP to Nick for Mr. Grumpy...now I find myself looking at vintage Japanese copies on ebay all weekend. My buddy also got a free Lyon jazz bass from someone to use for his home recording and had me check it out to see if it worked and played ok. Kind of made me miss the straight forward tight sound of a decent Jazz bass. I've also been listening to a ton of Acid King lately, which makes me GAS for both of those things.

P bass is my main jam usually. When I started messing around with recording some very dense guitar fuzz tones though, it kind of got lost in the mix and was too thuddy. I wouldn't get rid of my P bass, but I kind of also want a jazz again now. I thought I was going to buy another one before now, but the financial situation got pretty bad for most of the last year.

wrestling the basset hound to give him his ear cleanings, the vet said the infection is almost gone, thing is he'll accept the ear drops, but not the cleaning solution, the nikon Df is out for delivery, so hopefully it will arrive so i can take some pics of the church from john carpenter's the fog later this week in sierra madre to make some promo stuff or flyers

Went to visit my parents this weekend, it turned into a small family reunion with quite a few family members visiting in various days. Was pretty cool.
The bad part is, I caught a flu, couldn't get wasted, just came back home with a fever. Yay me.
Good thing, I got a few liters of my uncle's home made wine which tastes awesome. Not going to be able to drink it for next few days, though.
Not much going on on the band front.

Ha--Violet doesn't exactly do that, but she will take every opportunity to burrow under the pillows. We gotta check now every time we get up from the bed to make sure she hasn't worked her way in there.

She has finally gotten the hang of letting us know when she has to go outside, and as long as we give her appropriate toys and stuff, she doesn't chew on things much anymore. She may have just been teething.

I don't miss Gibson guitars that much because of my well-known aversion to set necks (including a terrible incident involving a '76 SG.) But I DO love Gibsons in general...particularly LPs, SGs and 335s. I used to have a nice old MIJ "Cameo" Les Paul copy with a bolt on neck. I should have really kept that and upgraded the pickups. It played like butter. All I have is a cheap Strat copy now, but as little as I play guitar, it's all I need. If anything, I wouldn't mind a nice acoustic guitar.

Sims from Jesus Lizard, Klaus Flouride from the DKs, Dave Alexander from the Stooges, Tracey Pew from The Birthday Party, Dennis Dunaway from Alice Cooper, Clint Conley from Mission of Burma...

But for some reason I never stick with a Jazz for long and always go back to thumping on a P. Someday I'll give the Jazz another try.

Trending now: I just applied for three jobs in Arizona. Just happened to be the place with the jobs I am qualified for. I've been putting in for better paying jobs all around here, but the fact is, my family and I would just prefer to NOT live in Oklahoma, but at the same time, we've lived lots of states and traveled through most and we know there are only a few we'd bother taking over OK. Arizona is one of them. we all love it there. I lived there in the 90s for a few years and it, along with Oregon, are my favorite states I've ever lived in. The cops and politics in AZ are kinda sh!tty though.

I also prefer bolt on necks and I generally prefer the feel of Fender style bodies. The SG is a notable exception, but I don't really like the body thickness or the shape all that much. Looks wise it's cool, but playing wise it balances weird. There are some good quality bolt neck Japanese made LP copies of note, but I'm not sold on buying any old guitars right now. Especially if I might have to modify or overhaul them, refret and all that nonsense. I kind of just want to do another parts build or make something for myself, but that would involve a lot of free time I don't really have and probably be just as expensive or even more so.

My Ibanez ST50 is Gibsonesque, but with a thinner neck profile and Fender scale length. The pickups are super bright and chimey though. I've been thinking about replacing them and wondering if it's worth modding when it's one of those vintage guitars that some people covet stock.

Oh man, I always thought those ST50s were pure class. Hell, LOTS of Ibanez and Yamaha instruments from that period are just special. But you know the thing about modding....if you don't have to do any routing or something irreversible, you can always put it back to stock.

I feel like a goon since I have been scrounging to buy an amp of some kind, but I was in OKC this weekend looking for a decent cheap combo amp 100-150W. Not sure if I found the right deal yet, but while trying out amps I grabbed this dusty old disused, forgotten, neglected Squier P bass in a pawn shop that was literally stuck in a corner and covered by guitars. I almost didn't see it.

I think it's the part of me that wants to bring home stray animals, but I can't stop thinking about that bass, and I very rarely have GAS. I hate to be so cheesy as to anthropomorphize an inanimate object, but since you are a musician, you'll probably get it or at least not make fun of me.

I felt like that bass needed me. Like it's just going to disintegrate otherwise. When I put it down and left I felt as if it were saying "Hey! where ya going? I'll be good to yooooou!"

Thing is too, that cheapo bass really felt and sounded good. Would want to check to see if the truss rod's maxed, but even though I could tell it had been sitting for months (which the pawn shop owner confirmed when I called him today) the neck was straight and it was even in tune. Also weighs about 10% of what my only other bass weighs.

In short, I'm planning on going back up this week and try to cut a deal for the bass AND amp together, haggle as much as possible, then put them in layaway. I can't afford to buy anything outright at the moment.

Good luck with your guitar travails. I do often miss having something with humbuckers. Aside from that Strat copy my only other six string is an old SX Telecaster copy. I could bucker it out, but I never thought I'd mess with that guitar. It's decent but it needs EVERYTHING except a body and neck. And I really use guitar more for texture than anything else these days.

I would rock a Strat or a Tele again. I definitely do heavy with either and have. I do prefer humbuckers at least though most of the time. My current main guitar is basically a Super Strat with dual humbuckers and that works great for me. I think replacing the pickups on my ST50 with a JB or Super Distortion or something would get me in the park for some Acid King style tones in drop D. I've also been playing more death metal lately and nothing I have really nails any fantastic tones for that. I don't want to mod my main guitar though, because it's versatile for a lot of different sounds as is.

I'm a big bag of confusion when it comes to guitars. I like the look and sound of Teles, Les Pauls and SGs, but hate the feel. I hate the look of Strats, but love the feel (sound can get there with the second position or an HB in the bridge). I love the feel and sound of a Super Strat, I'm lukewarm on the look but mine is the guitar I've used pretty much since I haven't ever played guitars in bands. I have wanted to try a newer LTD Eclipse model, since they make them more traditional looking with good passive pickups now, because those are really comfortable to play. I can't bring myself to part with the monies yet though. Maybe when I finish the mixing jobs I have going now and if I can sell my VTM 120 ever.

Esquire for teh heavy, works for me and the guy from whores. Miss mine a lot somedays.

Ultimate guitar for me would be a white hard tail strat body with tele guts and maple tele neck, 4 way switch for series. Contours and comfort of the strat, preferred tele neck and tone. Dunno how you'd manage to get it that cobbled together, but it'd be the one. A double cut tele would be a close and more achievable second.
