I have no bias against pick playing, and like the attack in certain situations. However, I haven't been using a pick much at all for the last few years so now when I try to use one it's difficult so I give up and go back to fingers.

Even though I started on guitar, using a pick on bass feels weird to me, so I just use my thumb and index finger to pick. So I love that pick sound but not comfortable holding the pick on bass, probably because I just back and forth from picking style to fingerstyle so often and like to move my hand to different plucking positions on the bass to get more bass or treble sounds.

I can't remember the session bassist who mentioned it but he is pick only but to get the tubey Motown sound while still using a pick he only does up strokes never down strokes, never.

There's a jazz bassist named Steve Swallow who does that as well. He actually uses a brass or copper pick, too.

I have a recommendation for you...try to post a link later. They are Dunlops, not sure of the specific name. Excellent grip to them, they come up to 5mm thick.

They have a sort of rubberized coating and this gives them a very fingers-like sound, though they can get as aggressive as you want.

I only found em a month or two back but they are my new faves. Similar to Wegens but much cheaper and they don't leave felt fuzz on yer bass.

I have a couple 2mm ones and some 5mms.

Still like to switch up picks, but I think these will always be my go-to.

I'm sorry. I'm out of cash! And for once I'm downsizing my board! I'll try not to do too many more home improvements the next few months...

Really, though, I still look often, but there's not much that people are getting rid of I want. And when there is, my above statement is relatively accurate.

You play with two fingers at once like one finger? Or use all four fingers paired off like a bass playing Vulcan?

Two at once. I typically only do octaves or power chords, and I just use same fingers I do for normal finger style, but simultaneously to hit both notes. Like I said, I don't play this stuff fast, or else I wouldn't be doing chords at all.

I heard these were "aggressive" sounding and I don't find that to be the case. The strings are huge and probably dead. Going to give it a good cleaning and set up with new strings tomorrow .

It's dead everywhere man. I had a ton of cool stuff I was selling at, not exaggerating, the lowest prices for the models anywhere online. Nothing. It took me months and months to move half the stuff I have for sale, at rock bottom prices. In some cases some of the things I was selling, it was the only model for sale anywhere I could find online too. It's not just music gear, I have some wood working tools that are new in the box that I've had listed for low prices and I can't sell those either. Sales were pretty dead at my work too, until a couple weeks ago. People apparently just aren't spending money. I mean I know I'm strapped for cash, but that's because my wife hasn't worked since before our son was born (and her income was half of our household income) and we've had a ton of unexpected bills because of the car wreck and medical stuff.

Speaking of selling gear, etc., anybody know a good alternative to a B3K? Still digging mine, but always on the hunt. Unfortunately, to keep with the current talk, I can't spend much right now. I'm thinking something with a nice upper mid grind. The tone I have in mind is old school thrash. Overkill, Exodus, Testament, Kreator, Sodom, etc. And I don't usually like really distorted tones. Something with some nice lows, and mid bite. Thanks!

some of the early ones have a really dark voice with an insane output, in fact when i use mine with the sludge band i never use boost or od pedals, because i'm naturally getting a kind of sludgier rat tone by just plugging the L2000 into my mesa d180, mine is as deep with rounds as most basses are with flat wounds, i always use deadish dunlop or xl170 nickel rounds with mine, it's kind of like a ballsier, more focused, and more even string to string p bass thing

Never used one. I'll look into it. Never used a Boss before, but I know the ODB-3 gets used pretty often. Doesn't it get modded a lot, too?

Yeah lots of mods on that little bugger. I still need to do my mod to cut the treble noise out. It is a tad noisy but a great little distortion pedal and nothing a noise gate can't tame. Nice on guitar too. Dirt cheap and has a clean blend too.
