Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

That same diesel garage I worked at, we had one of the parts guys who was a truck driver till his back gave out(otherwise known as he really likey the Oxy) and one of his jobs was too clean the shop bathroom. He had a terrible gag reflex and when he would get started gagging while cleaning, well some of the mechanics would start fake gagging to get him going. Needless to say he hated cleaning the bathrooms. So the one day a mechanic had some rye bread and it looked just like a turd if you squeezed into the shape of a turd. We put it right on the toilet seat and they told Steransky to report to the bathroom because there is a mess. Well he effen loses it. I was assistant to the boss and he wasn't there so he comes in screaming Joe, this is ridiculous, I can't do it, I just can't. I said it's just shite, man up, to stir him up. So he is come look, really come look and see how bad it is. I walk over, and say this, this is what you are belly aching about, I said don't worry baby I will take care of it and walk over with my bare hand to knock in it the water. He freaks out saying Jesus Christ don't touch it, I will do it, I will do it, don't touch it, and starts getting sick and gagging, he freaks out so bad I stop, and then he realizes out it is fake and picks it up with rubber gloves and was oh ha ha ha. He said he almost threw up when you went to touch it bare handed. He was like actually going to restrain me from touching it ha ha ha.

When I was a prison guard, well lots of poop slingers there, but one guy in the hole, would take off all his clothes and wipe crap all over himself, all over the mattress, the walls, the floor. Yeah I don't think you will be getting your hour of day exercise today Chumpy. Yeah I changed career paths awful fast after that.
My brother used to date this little uber hottie named Sarah Leigh. We referred to her as the Pound Cake.

Sadly no. My brother was a terrible lady killer in his twenties and didn't like to associate with them longer then three weeks. That boy has had some fine trim, it was like having Gene Simmons for a brother, we shared an apartment and he would bring one home, then walk past me watching tv and make a motion with his thumb to look behind him with a poopie arse grin on face and head the new three week to his room. Then a few weeks later he would do that with another one. Though there were a few he should of kept and stayed steady with as they were decent gals and now he is older and has quite the reputation of oh don't date him in the county. He should of kept a video diary like Dennis on Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
I have worked in social services off and on since I was a teen--a great portion of this was direct care for people with (often severe) developmental and physical disabilities. These are often accompanied by an array of pretty heavy psychiatric diagnoses.
I won't even go into all the poop-filled stories of poop, but lemme say you really haven't lived until you try to change a diaper on a huge 40-something hairy guy who DOES NOT WANT you to be messing with him and fights you every inch of the way.
I've had plenty of folks yank off a fully loaded diaper and start flinging it around, sh!t literally going everywhere.
You develop quick reflexes.
I've also had the pleasure of having huge chunks of my hair pulled out (once by a real tiny little gal...psychosis coupled with adrenaline can really make a bear out of people), been kicked, scratched, bit, choked, punched and spit on more times than I can count.
But the best was when I was working in a sheltered workshop (as they called them) with an older guy calmly working right next to me after I had showed him how to work the latest contract job we got. I knew this man well and we got along great. We had just been joking around in fact. Then it got quiet for a second and--for no reason I could ever figure--he grabbed a flathead screwdriver and stabbed me 2" + deep in my left thigh.
Still have the scar. I was kind of impressed. Went through my jeans and deep enough to nick my femur. Walked a little funny for a while after that. Went to the hospital with the screwdriver still sticking out of me. Good times.
Wow. Is it ethical or legal to file suit for that kind of thing? I mean sure, I could deal with the poo fling, spitting and hair pulling, but if I get stabbed, the other guy is going to the hospital as well and I may be going in cuffs. I say that assuming mental competence of my would be assailant, but is there no recourse for something like that? Would your boss look at you and say " standard job hazard, get back to work"?
Call me selfish and coldhearted, but I will never work with anyone that has a chance to throw poo on me. Or stab me. Get me written up for talking to your boobs, that's fine. Poop is not fine. And if I worked in a prison, there would definitely be a string of suspicious prisoner deaths.
Well, I was around 18 when this happened, so my mind wasn't really going there (lawsuits, retaliation, etc.) If it had been a "regular dude" trying to flick me some crap, I would have laid him flat out, but working with people with problems like these...in a large sense it IS just an occupational hazard. Different states operate differently too. In Oregon if you get injured doing this kind of thing you are automatically put under medical observation and go on light duty until you get released back to work...
(side note--when I was doing this kind of work in Oregon there was a young gal--tough as nails, but cool--who had been on light duty (doing office work and such) because a resident of the group home where she worked choked her nearly to death. The VERY DAY she came back to work in a different group home 2-3 months later, another resident caved in the entire side of her face with one blow--orbital bone, cheekbone, jaw--just busted up.)
I don't know about Oklahoma (where my flathead screwdriver incident took place.) Oregon I was part of a pretty active union. In Oklahoma unions are just considered evil Communist horsecrap. These types of jobs, you usually do get pretty intensive training and I never really held it against the people who ever attacked me because I don't feel it was usually much of a conscious reaction--more just an askew reaction to some stimuli. Lots of emotional instability and behavioral firestorms.
Definitely, though, you could file for worker's comp (even in Oklahoma) in a situation like this. I seriously doubt there could be any other legal ramifications unless you could prove the agency or facility itself was liable because they failed to meet some safety protocol or you hadn't been trained or whatever.
Trying to take one of the disabled to court would not work because they have almost always been deemed incompetent and unable to speak or care for themselves. Generally these folks have an appointed guardian--either a family member or someone appointed by the court. Sometimes a group home manager is a legal guardian. This isn't always the case--many developmentally disabled people are considered "high functioning" and are much more independent and able to communicate.
It's not selfish or coldhearted. Not everyone is cut out for everything. I've seen dozens of people go through weeks of training and the first time they walk into a group home or into a workshop or whatever, and see someone drooling in one corner, someone screaming bloody murder in another, and someone in a crash helmet beating their head against a wall, they say "Oh. I....think I left something in my car..." then they quickly exit and you hear their tires screeching as they speed the hell away forever.
That doesn't make them bad people. It's a difficult line of work a lot of days.
You're a good hearted soul. I can deal with just about anything that can wash off and a lot of small minor injuries. I wouldn't tolerate a stab would or anything more serious though.
Between the dually, the svp cl + prolite and that Fury from Burnsy, the next few weeks are going to filled with brown truck related anxiety and a lot of joy. I can't wait. I may actually also have some excess funds to look for a used Afterneath as well, so thats pretty freakin cool. About the only thing that could make it better is if a certain doom oriented pedal builder makes good on his 6th "next week at the latest" commitment to the pedals I bought 8 months ago. That's probably a pipe dream though. I think I am going to give him until the end of the year before I just say **** it and file with paypal to get my money back and forget about him and his products. Patience is wearing thin and really the time frame is just way to long at this point with way to many broken commitments. So many that the "quality takes time" argument is a moot point. Fuzzrocious sells far more pedals and has a much lower wait time with more honesty.

Rat clone is coming along, waiting for 2 caps and the PCB mount pots to arrive in the mail and I'll be able to finish it up.
Couldn't do all of Satyrnine's suggestions because it's a pre-made PCB designed to fit in a 1590B enclosure and he had suggested some HUGE (physically large) capacitors that just won't fit in the 1590B box. So I did his clipping diode mod, upped the input and output caps slightly and used high-quality metal film/mica capacitors instead of the cheap ceramic disc ones. So it won't be a total game-changer, but it will be a slightly higher audio quality, less noise with more complex/interesting clipping.
Plus side is that I have all of the parts/caps needed to upgrade a real RAT, which will probably be the next project.

I hear a lot of cork sniffing regarding cap composition. Its not that I am in disbelief, but I think that in some circuits ceramic caps can do just fine. My Hail Satan has a few ceramic caps and that pedal is simply awesome. I have had a few others that use them as well. I'd be really curious to truly hear the difference. Maybe I'll buy a rat based PCB and just socket EVERYTHING for the sake of research and try a variety of cap compositions maintaining the same values just to try her out.
I'm sure that there's lots of pedals that sound awesome with ceramic caps, that probably depends on the design of the circuit, the function of the cap in that circuit, etc. There's a lot of factors at play and I don't think it's as simple as Ceramic Disc = BAD.
I did the Monte Allums mods to the ODB-3 and the higher-quality caps made a huge difference there. I'd check it after every component swap and the film caps really cleaned up the harsh high-end and knocked out a lot of the noise in the circuit. So that's my anecdotal experience...
In the end it's usually only a few cents more to get the nicer caps so I figured I might as well get the nicer ones. I could understand if I was building thousands of units the extra cost might add up, but for my purposes the price difference isn't big enough to bother going cheaper. Plus, it's a feature that I can call out if/when I sell the thing.
