Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

My drummer tells me his buddy at work is selling Amazon Fire sticks for $150 - which are hacked to provide all cable channels. No details or more info of course, but based on google it looks like people load XBMC on there.

And those Cataldo basses look killer.

There was a Gibson Victory on my local craigslist for $900, but it's gone already. (They have one on Reverb though)

Don't pay that much for the Victories. They are great basses but they don't pull much money if you sell them. I had the double pickup and single pickup versions. Bought one for $500 and the other for $350.

Well, the verdict is in. GK Rails pedal helps everything to cut! Now, if only the guitarists wouldn't let their volume creep up slowly throughout the night to cover the bass...

At least they recognized it as an issue at the end though, and said they'd have to turn down a little next practice. That's pretty rare for many guitarists! Glad mine are about the band as a whole, and not their own stuff. Bandmate-wise, this is definitely the best group of dudes I've ever jammed with. Also talent-wise. Gotta sharpen up my bass chops! Got too complacent with slower riffs, got a dude who does faster stuff again (and some slower doom, too!). Anyway, positive rant over. Off to bed. Night, gents!

XBMC!?! I remember when it was actually ON Xbox. In fact, I still use my original Xbox for XBMC every so often. Oh, the nostalgia...

I just read up on it and discovered it in looking for a device. My smart tv only has a few apps, the PS3 for gaming is cool, but the browser and stuff sucks. I've always been interested in the android stuff figure I can get all the Rom home brew stuff I couldn't get on the iPhone, while gaining better streaming.

Also google play has Star Wars: kotor, totally gotta get that.

I've been in this band I'm in for a year and we are just now playing our first show on October 3rd. And the material was already written when I joined.

Also I have been kinda having blah tone lately and thought to switch it up. I went and picked up my qsc power amp and decided to try some preamps I have thru it. I hate to say it but I kinda dig this sansamp RBI I have. What's even weirder is I dig the "SVT" setting and been having blah tone thru my actual svt. It sounds scooped so I think it's going for that "ultra low" vibe with the SVT setting. Think I might rack it up and do a little Pepsi challenge at next practice.

That's heartening, makes me feel a lot less frustrated. I guess this is the first band I've been in for ages where I felt the other guys were just as keen and committed as I am, and all on the same page, so I'm overly eager to get it going.

Picked up a Matt Freeman sig P today, just absolutely loving it. Pretty much cemented my realization that I am pretty much a strict P and Thunderbirds kinda guy.

Standing by for t-bird through mister grumpy. :)

Ditto

Getting hammered buy uni and work at the moment. Means that the band is moving towards gigging slower than I'd originally hoped, which is frustrating. How long do you guys normally take from band starting to gigging originals?

Current two-piece outfit started jamming in March of last year, first gig November of that year. Took longer than I wanted, but it worked out. Drummer wasn't wild about most of the stuff I'd already written before hand, took us a while to "find our sound". Also we are actually playing maybe all of 80 minutes per week. Not much time between the time we each get our kids to bed, we get set up, and then the time where our old asses are too tired to make any useful progress anymore.

Previous band I was in, a four-piece, there was a lot of talk about "reworking our sound". We maybe got three new original songs going, all written by me, in the two years I was in the band. Not fast. Once, before I joined the band, the lead guitarists' wife asked me, "It takes them a WHOLE YEAR to write ONE song and get it ready to play live. Is that normal?" heh heh.

It's both, some kind of synthetic material that really resonates. It is a trip to let a normal plastic nut bounce off the fret then swap to bouncing the Tusq nut off a fret, it rings out so much better. Not that it matters that much but still interesting to hear.

Interesting, that is something that I've never replaced but once for another plastic.

The lotus has a brass nut, I wonder what the damage done is for buying a brass one? I'd bought one once off bass parts resource but it was puny compared to this big ass chunk of metal. Also traded the neck it was meant for and it.

Yeah I guess that brass nut was a big deal in the 70's. That 12 string acoustic Cortez I got off my buddy has a brass nut and brass saddle. Damn thing has a belly bulge. Going to try and use some wood with clamps and some steam in the sound hole to reduce the bulge so the action isn't so terrible. Great tone but you have to be the Hulk to hold the strings down.

Not sure if any of you gents are still interested in my kava reviews LOL, but I recently found a great, inexpensive, and easy to prepare instant kava that has great effects. Stir one tablespoon in a cup of water or whatever your drink of choice and shake it till it blends. One cup is fine for work, and stack a few cups and your smile just keeps growing!
Crazy cheap for instant(micronized) kava. Also a $5 dollar coupon for first time buyers, so like $22 bucks shipped, and they ship fast!
