Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So I've used the new Rotos on my basses for a week, and while I still think that there might be something changed, there still plenty Roto sounding to me. I think part of it was when I first tested them, I wasn't using the settings I normally play with live. So I went home at lunch the other day and turned the Sunn up to 5 to open it up and test out the basses, and played with heavier right hand technique, and there's the sound. So here's some observations regarding the basses:
EB-3: the bridge pickup is everything I wish a Jazz bass bridge pup sounded like. Way more fat sounding, while still having that tight snap and honk. With the D'Addarios, it's a pretty bright and aggressive bass, definitely not the 1 trick fart pony people think it might be. Still working on adjusting the pickup heights to better balance the outputs.
4001v63: Daaaaaaaayum. The new Rotos really opened this bass up. It had some sort of rounds on it before (I think the seller said Fenders?), but the grind is REAL with the Swing 66s. Those Horseshoes are really hot pickups, not all that different sounding from my Precision, except maybe a bit more driven. With both pups, some of the drive gets taken out but with more clank thanks to the neck pickup.
Precision: I mean, what can I say. I dig my other basses, they sound great, but whenever I put new RS66s on the precision, the thought always crosses my mind "Why do I use any other bass?" I don't plan on selling any of the others (probably), but really, it's the perfect amount of grind and drive and gank. Somewhere in the orbit of John Wetton's King Crimson live tone and Entwistle's tone on the US '68 tour (Sunn 200s). I've never really gone for pushing a lot of lows, and since I've always played in trios I was thinking the other day that a lot of the tone I go for and even playing is more filling what a rhythm guitar would be doing, and the precision does that sound really well. It's always sort of confused me why people are like Precision = Flats and thump, and the Jazz is seen to cut through better. I mean, I guess the jazz might cut though a little better in the mix, but if that's the case then the Precision is like a bulldozer.

Fingers were finally healed up enough to play finger style at practice last night, felt like coming home. ...and to think I thought I was starting to prefer the pick. Nope! So much more control and dynamics, it was awesome.
Been having trouble keeping the volume levels of the dirt pedals in the right place. The M85 in led mode is super touchy, goes from too quiet to too loud with the tiniest adjustment. Bazz is less touchy, but the knobs turn easily. Never was much of an issue before, mostly because I had some kind of dirt always on. Now I'm using the overdriven svt as my "clean" and kicking in dirt for the heavier parts. I keep having to readjust the volume levels on the pedals. Thinking of hot gluing the knobs in the correct position. Would be easily reversible.

I love rotos every time I use them... For about a week. One of the best fresh sounds but I don't care for them when they wear in and I strongly dislike how fast they lose their snap.
I've had compression (Aguilar) and Envelope Filter (MXR) together on the board for many months. They work fine together.
Compressor after the filter can help reduce the loud squeals the filter can sometimes make. It helps even out the volume changes a filter can create. (So can tuning the filter better
Compressor before the filter reduces the dynamic range of the signal going into the filter, so that the filter won't sweep as far.

Cant wait for tomorrow! First practice with my new band me and a buddy are doing, this one is gonna be a drone pop band, named Quakes & Lowwaves. Guitar and bass playing fuzzy washed out and reverby pop with a drone instead of a drum beat. Not going for volume or wall of amps on this one, the guitarist will use a Fender Pawn Shop Vapotizer 210 15watt combo probably dimed and some effects, so Im going vulcan into my 218. Bass through a MXR Blue Box, which is actually one of my favorite pedals and I think itll be prefect for this project, into the effects side of the vulcan and then my noise case going through the clean side to make the drone "beat".

@kleinenenten sorry man. This is what I meant even though it's opposite of what I described. It's been a while since I've owned a filter. If volume drop is the issue, I still think you should grab a boost.
I asked before but didn't see a response. Avatar has kappalite 3015s "made for genz benz" drivers for $140. Does anyone have any idea what if any spec differences there are between these and regular 3015s? Do you think eminence would divulge this info seeing that GB was bought out?

Several different Genz Benz variants popped up when they closed doors. According to @agedhorse (former Genz engineer)there is significant difference both to the drivers they are based on and to the spec sheets Avatar provided.
The only 2 ways I would use those drivers would be:
1.clone the original genz cabinet.
2.be prepared for significant trial and error equating to lost time and money.
They are for sure great drivers, but their specific details can't be divulged by former employees. Without knowing those details success cannot be predicted.
Ok, so can it boost the volume after the filter back to unity? I really need to find a way to turn on the boost and filter simultaneously so I don't have to dance on the board. You can use a loop pedal with a built in boost. Just leave the filter on and use the loop to take it in and out of the signal.

Interesting. I wonder why details cannot be released given the company no longer exists. Seems silly to protect a companies intellectual property when the company is no longer around.
Also a super cheap and easy build.

My Bluesman Vintage J came in while was on the road. Cool, early 60's style J. Here's the current lineup, minus a couple pawn shop basses

Went to the milwaukee auto show thia past week, sat in a ford transit connect for like 20 minutes examining every detail, measuring it out in my mind, how many amps cab and drums could I fit in here. A lot I think, maybe even a Full PVYHenge. 2 spots up front for me and Joe, 25ish mpg fully loaded. I think I found my perfect vehicle. Now if onky i could stop buying amps long enough to save uo for a car hah!
