Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm thinking dual 810s and a reliable 2 ohm stable 300w tube head are in order. Old reliable so to speak. I'm seriously tired of buying gear out of necessity. It's too difficult financially and is sort of sapping the fun out of buying gear.

That said, I'll probably just rock what I have for a while. I'm growing more and more frustrated with my metal band and am considering walking after our booked show and album are recorded. I've got other outlets that I can invest in at this point that won't require a stadium rig. Drummer is a bit of a douche, lead player wants to own the spectrum, practices are routinely cancelled for date nights and other BS reasons and I feel somewhat excluded at rehearsal when ideas are being tossed around. Only reason I'm still sticking it out is because I love the tunes and as obnoxious as the lead players aural presence is, I like him as a person a lot and I love his playing.

I could also just continue to haul the 2000s and V4B. The only time I really struggled with volume with that rig I think I had a faulty patch cable. I just don't like moving all of that weight if there are equally/louder options that are lighter. I also would rather not gig them and reserve them for my apartment and the studio. The V4B isn't actually mine, I just have it on semi-permanent loan. And I'd hate to blow up a couple vintage rare and semi rare amps.

There's a VB2 in the classifieds for 5 bills. Pair that with your Sunn and you'll have lots of tubey wattage.

Yeah, I actually built one of those since all my cabs are wired at 4 Ohms. There's plans on the Sunn forum, REALLY easy to wire up. To me that'd be a pretty good setup. You can take one or two 8x10s as required, and use the 2000s or get a 300w head for louder shows.

@Turkeypills Actually, there's a '68 Sunn 1200s (big Dynaco transformers, 4 controls), $650. I looked at it, but having just sprung for the EB, I can't swing it. I actually have a bunch of photos from the seller. You might want to check it out.

3. 4003S8, not sure what color. Tuned EADG.
4. Second 4003S8 in a different color, tuned BEAD.
5. My modded Peavey, which is currently tuned BEAD.
6. Second 4001 or 4003 tuned EADG.
7. 4003FL tuned EADG
8. 4003FL tuned BEAD.
9. Slab P-bass with an oversized single coil pickup slightly closer to the bridge than standard. Just because. White, of course.

Which is why I need to try, and put through PVYHenge, a dually or 1515/66 before id even consider buying one, and also why ill probably never buy one. Sure its a super 215 but its still only 30" of speaker.

The only cab I plan on purchasing in the near future is a Mauler 218, that is as tall as an 810 and as wide as a 412, but doesnt need to be that deep.

That's why you get multiples of them.

Get the head first. Something stupid powerful like a Peavey Classic 400 or something.

There will usually be a hole somewhere in the guitarist's frequency range. Find it, and make your sound like a spike that goes right into it. Note that this will mean your bass will sound godawful on its own.

That said, if you're feeling excluded from the songwriting process, it might be time to invest a bit less in this band. Also cancelling rehearsals for date nights is lame. One night a week shouldn't be too much to ask if people have it free.

My 2000S cab is currently wired in series, 8 ohms.

Hey, I know what I like.

I'll be interested in other basses of that price tier when other companies start making basses with necks like that and pickups like that in those pickup positions, with those controls.

You know the builder was totally shocked that one of the drivers was bunk when I first received the cab. He had not yet seen a factory Faital that was defective. I cannot imagine somehow finding three. That would be some luck. Maybe it's the porting but that really leaves me with little faith in the builder if that Is the case. I don't want to think like that though.




No joke. Tubes or not, I feel like this cab should rip. I'm just going to rework my whole rig and see if maybe there are issues elsewhere. I have a variety of heads to test.

I'd also add that for whatever inexplicable reason the JBLs are ill fitting. The rim of the basket frame sits about 1/2" above the baffle. The holes are clearly too large for 12" drivers but too small for 15s. Only explanation I can come up with was the stock drivers had a deeper and narrower frame. Even with that, more bass response.




I think that's it right there. Like Bryce, I was sold on form factor and similar output of an 810. It certainly sounds better than my 810, but in terms of volume and SPL it hides behind the shadow of the fridge. Well, I guess the upper mids and highs are pretty close to the 810 but with like half of the bass response.


This whole situation is poopie. Maybe @Ender_rpm or @kleinenenten can come over and spend some time A/Bing things with me to gain an additional perspective and maybe a clearer wording of the response.

I ended up getting a membership at Utopia, once I get rehearsal locked down this week, let's book a room and get stupid loud.
