Terrible thunder and rain, but website said hails out of the question. So back to Patton Oswalt on the Netflix at home. Tornado can still come, but meh, as long as my car isn't all lumpy I'll sleep good.
I'm just glad thunder doesn't bother her. Several of the dogs I know literally poopie themselves with any kind of thunderstorms
All she cares about was that I didn't bogart the jerky.

Hey guys, I was seeking some advice regarding pickups. I'm considering taking my active pups out and putting some lower output humbuckers in.
My current rig consists of an ESP LTD F415 into a Trace Elliot V4 all-tube amp head (220w) followed by what's soon to be a Faital loaded Dually. I run heavy (.158 B string, .118 E string)Kalium Strings. The stock pups on my bass are the EMG40DC's. I've heard these are good active pickups, but I primarily play Stoner/Desert Rock/Doom (Kyuss, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Bongzilla, Melvins, Orange Goblin, Truckfighters, etc.) LOTS of dirt via pedals (OD into Fuzz(s), wah, etc). I'm finding that the tone is just a little too "Hi-Fi" from what I'm used to hearing in the specified genres.
If I swap out my 40DC's for moderate output humbuckers, would I just be making my rig less flexible while barely helping my tone? I've also heard of people mixing and matching a moderate output humbucker with a hotter output near the bridge? It's also worth noting that my bass is made of Mahogany topped with Maple and a Rosewood fingerboard, so it's a pretty warm sounding setup already.

What dirt do you use w/active pups? How do actives interact differently w/dirt?
Last question could go for anyone with experience. I've never owned a bass w/active pups.
Before you go swapping pickups - have you played around with the EQ on your bass? I went through a similar thing with my ATK until I realized how much tone shaping I have at the bass. I roll treble off nearly completely, boost the lows a bit and boost the mids a bit more than that. The result is a tone that's much closer to a vintage passive-pickup sound. Maybe you already did that, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
I really haven't noticed much of a difference moving from passive to active. The ATK doesn't have a super hot output so that's probably a factor in my experience. Really I just need to watch that I'm not boosting the output signal by applying too much EQ. That can cause the dirt pedals to "choke" a bit or give some sub-par results. Other than that I haven't had any issues. I don't know where the myth that active basses and dirt pedals don't mix came from. It's false.
Currently the Hot Cake mkii into a Way Huge Swollen Pickle with a wah after, is my vanilla setup. I also have an MXR Distortion+, in addition to a b:assmaster i just got, but have yet to play with it to work it into my signal chain.
If that's your only bass, might consider getting an cheap passive backup. Just random idea
I dig the Swollen Pickle a lot on bass. Have you messed with the internal trimmers?
When I had a bass big muff, it didn't agree with the active fender I had at the time. Other than that, filters didn't work as well with active preamps in my experience

I generally favor high output passive pickups, but usually single coils rather than humbuckers. I've never liked active pickups on either guitar or bass.
Pretty sure he's talking about active pickups rather than an active preamp.
I use that. Have the scoop dialed all the way off for maximum midrange grind, but very low on the sustain knob as I'm going into an already overdriven amp.
